The Kākāpō is a beautiful, curious and unique bird and its campervan namesake certainly continues these qualities, as well as its colour scheme! This custom-made bespoke campervan has been perfectly designed to give you an amazing rolling home to explore Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Kākāpō is a light bright and super welcoming camper van and is the perfect base for two people to explore one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Kākāpō has a high spec, quality build and being pet friendly, you don't have to leave anyone behind to miss out on all the fun!
Of course, one of the main advantages of hiring a campervan to explore New Zealand is the ability to be off grid and take the roads less travelled by other tourists. Ask anyone, the best way to see New Zealand is by land. It's for this exact reason that the Kākāpō will transform your trip into the most memorable campervan holiday of a lifetime.

Note: Kākāpō, like all our larger vans, has a minimum 3 night hire.

About the Campervan

Location: Kākāpō lives in Sydenham approx. 15km from Christchurch airport and just a couple of kilometres from the city centre. Kākāpō may be able to be brought to a convenient location for pick-up/drop-off by arrangement and for a small fee.

In The Cab: 3 seats in cab up front (with 3-point seat belts); reversing camera, USB port, first aid kit.

Kitchen Area: The interior height is 1.85m so most people can stand up comfortably. Kākāpō has a solid wood, fully equipped kitchen complete with two-burner hob as well as a fridge with a freezer compartment. The automatic (remote operated) extractor fan is great when you're cooking, or just on those hot evenings when you want a little fresh air. Cutlery, crockery, glasses and mugs for four; knife set (sharp!), wide range of utensils, 3 pans and a fry pan all with lids, mixing/serving bowls, kettle and coffee pot; coffee, tea, sugar, oil, salt and pepper.

Living/Sleeping Area: Kākāpō has a full queen-size width bed measuring 153cm x 203cm with proper mattress... no compromise here! Note: we list bedding and towels as Extras at the booking stage in case guests prefer to bring their own. There is tonnes of storage space in the main living area and whilst we fully recommend you get out and explore what awesome adventures Aotearoa has to offer, we wouldn't blame you if you wanted to curl up, cast some of your Netflix favourites from your phone to the 32" monitor, or grab a book, DVD, or board game from the entertainment cupboard full of New Zealand favourites and road trip classics.

Water Facilities: Like all Quirky Campers in NZ, Kākāpō is certified self-contained. There are 40 litre fresh and grey water tanks and electric pump tap and oversized sink in the kitchen area. The portable toilet is stored under the bed.

Electrical/Lighting and Audio Equipment: Kākāpō has been fitted with a 500w solar panel as well as having more than 200amp hours of battery power. Combined with the multiple 12 and 240v outlets, you can charge up all your gadgets, safe in the knowledge you won't be running out of juice! A Bluetooth speaker is available as an optional extra.

Type of Heating: Insulated with super efficient diesel heater.

Outside: Another way to get your dose of sunshine and fresh air is to swing open the rear barn doors and soak in whatever surroundings you've chosen to park yourself up in that night. Outside chairs and table are also available as an optional extra… as well a tent if you really want to get off the beaten track.

Conversion Story: We bought the former fleet van in mid 2017. Since then it’s been an absolute labour of love stripping it back to its bone and transforming it into the rolling home away from home that it is today. For us, New Zealand’s all about getting outside and exploring. This, coupled with the fact that one of us is six foot five, meant that including a comfortable full queen sized bed, so you’re ready to go each day, was a must. The full queen-sized bed also means there’s a heap of storage space, and the solar panels mean that getting off the beaten track for days at a time isn’t a problem. When Kākāpō isn’t booked out, we love our weekend road trips, with Banks Peninsula (which is a stone throw from Christchurch) being our go-to! – Simon & Kendall
