Stevie is a very clever little campervan for a couple who essentially want to drive a car but have all the mod cons of a camper. The genius behind Stevie’s smart set-up is VanLab – a Kiwi business specialising in flat-pack kits to turn empty vehicles into a campervans in a matter of hours. Stevie belongs to VanLab’s founder and if you’re considering buying a kit for your own van, then why not try before you buy?
Despite her size, Stevie can be configured for working, sleeping, dining and even movie nights! She’s fully self-contained and while she may not be as well suited to extended stays, she’s economic on fuel, easy to park and the perfect weekender. Take her for a spin and as her namesake would say… Go Your Own Way!

Note: Stevie, like all our compact vans, has a minimum 2 night hire.

About the Campervan

Location: Stevie lives in East Tamaki approx. 14km (20 mins drive) from Auckland airport and about 20km (30 mins drive) from Auckland CBD. If you’re driving your own car, it can be safely parked at the property (off-road) while you’re away. Stevie also can be brought to a convenient Auckland location for pick-up/drop-off by arrangement.

In The Cab: 2 seats in cab up front (with 3-point seat belts).

Kitchen Area: The interior height is 1.3m. Stevie has a compact kitchen unit which stores a single-burner camping stove (recommended for outdoor use only) as well as a thermoelectric cooler (electric chilly bin) and cutlery, crockery, glasses and mugs for two; knives, utensils, 2 pans and salt and pepper. Stevie also comes with placements, coasters and food storage containers/covers.

Living/Sleeping Area: The bench seating and tables convert to a king single bed (105cm x 180cm) so it is a cosy set-up. No room for arguments here! Note: we list bedding and towels as Extras at the booking stage in case guests prefer to bring their own. There are curtains for privacy and small storage areas under the bench seats… but don’t bring the kitchen sink! Stevie also comes with a couple of games to keep you entertained whatever the weather!

Water Facilities: Like all Quirky Campers in NZ, Stevie is certified self-contained. There are 25 litre fresh and grey water tanks, a hand pump tap and small sink in the kitchen unit. The portable toilet is stored under the front bench and can slide out for use, even when the bed is set-up.

Electrical/Lighting and Audio Equipment: Stevie has a 120Ah leisure battery to power the LED lights, cooler and USB sockets so you can be entirely self-sufficient for a day or two without driving around to recharge the battery. She also has 350W inverter to power devices like a laptop.

Type of Heating: None

Conversion Story: I’d previously worked as a design engineer for McLaren Automotive in the UK before moving to NZ. In Auckland, I found myself designing home appliances, and let’s just say it was the motivation I needed to bring my own business to life. I launched VanLab at the beginning of 2020, with the idea of providing people an easy and cost-effective way to turn a vehicle into a campervan with a DIY flat-pack kit. Stevie is arguably VanLab’s showroom on wheels! I think she’s great for a quick getaway, with all the benefits of driving a car which stealthily turns into a campervan. I particularly like the configurability of Stevie; she can easily be setup for a movie, home office, kitchen, living room or bed just by moving two tables around the van! Enjoy your trip and give me a shout if you’d like your own! - Andy
