You made it to the far side of the world. But what’s next? This guide takes us on a journey through the central North Island’s most popular loop. Hopefully this rough guide helps you build your own North Island itinerary. We’ve based it on ten to twelve days however you can tailor things up or down depending on your preferences and how much time you have to play with. The route runs from Auckland to the Coromandel, down through the Bay of Plenty to Rotorua and Taupō, into Tongariro, then back north via Waitomo or Hobbiton, with the option of a night or two on the west coast at Raglan. This route takes in some of NZ’s best beaches, lakes, alpine passes and some of the tastiest surf in the country.

By James O’Hern · General Manager, Quirky Campers NZ · Published September 2026

<picture class="wp-picture-884708" style="display: contents;"></picture>

On occasion the North Island gets overlooked by visitors flying straight to Christchurch or Queenstown, but it’s important to remember the North Island contains some of New Zealand’s greatest natural and cultural treasures.

In under two weeks you can hang out in a hot tub you dug yourself at Hot Water Beach, pick your way through hot springs, geysers and geothermal spots galore, sleep beneath a volcano, drift through a cave lit by glow worms and learn to surf on a world famous black sand break. The Coromandel is where many Kiwis take their own holiday, and as soon as you arrive it is easy to see why. Base yourself at Hahei, a small beach village that punches well above its size. From here you can reach the two things everyone comes for.

Hot Water Beach is exactly what it says. Sculpted by wind and waves over countless years, this spectacular limestone formation feels like it is from another world.

Worth knowing before you go: the walking track and local roads have had a difficult few years of storm damage, so check the DOC website whilst making your plan to go. If it is shut, kayaking in from Hahei beach is a great option.

With a second day, the Pinnacles is one of the North Island’s great walks, a steep climb through old kauri logging country to a rock summit with views across the whole peninsula. Or if you want some more rest, spend the afternoon at The Lost Spring spa in Whitianga, a geothermal pool complex built into a bush garden, which is a very easy way to lose three hours.

Suggested stay: Two nights near Hahei
Approximate drive: 180 km from Auckland, around three hours

Day 4: Waihi Beach and Mount Maunganui

Drive south down the winding coast road and stop anywhere that takes your fancy. Waihi Beach is nine kilometres of sand with a walking track at the northern end that leads over the headland to Orokawa Bay, which you will very likely have to yourself. It is also one of the more reliable freedom camping spots in the region for green-certified vans, with a dump station on site.

Carry on to Mount Maunganui. The Mount itself, Mauao, sits at the end of a sandspit with a walking track that loops the base in forty minutes, or climbs to the summit in about half an hour depending on your fitness. It’s pretty steep either way. Do the summit at sunrise if you’re an early bird, the view back over the harbour and out along the beach is worth the early start.

The town below is full of surf shops, coffee spots, restaurants and a long ocean beach. There is a short walk from the car park, and a longer riverside track if you want to earn it.

Otherwise, this is a day to slow down. Swim in the lake, find a hot spring where the geothermal stream meets the river, or sit outside the van and watch the light change on the mountains across the water. Tomorrow, weather permitting, you are about to walk up one of them.

Suggested stay: One night
Approximate drive: 80 km from Rotorua, around an hour

Days 8 to 9: Tongariro

<picture class="wp-picture-1700743" style="display: contents;"></picture>

Tongariro is New Zealand’s oldest national park and a dual World Heritage site, recognised for both its landscape and its significance to the local iwi. Three active volcanoes sit in a row, and the whole place feels older and stranger than anywhere else on the route. In places it looks like you’ve left Earth behind and landed on the surface of Mars.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is nineteen and a half kilometres across a volcanic saddle, past emerald crater lakes and steaming vents, with Mount Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom for the Lord of the Rings fans!) alongside you for much of it. It takes most people seven to eight hours, and it is a one-way track, so you’ll need to book your crossing through DOC and sort a shuttle to get you back to your van. Weather on the mountain changes fast and the crossing is regularly closed, so build in a spare day if you can and respect the forecast and local advice on whether it’s safe to walk.

Alternatively, for those with more time you can turn this into a multi-day hike by completing the Northern Circuit, which is one of NZ’s Great Walks. Stay in huts along the route and take in the best parts of the Tongariro Crossing too. Huts book up fast, so get in early.

If a full alpine day is not the plan, there are shorter walks from the Whakapapa side, including the Taranaki Falls loop which gives you a proper sense of the landscape in a couple of hours.

In winter, this becomes ski country. Whakapapa on the northern side and Tūroa above Ohakune are the two fields on Mount Ruapehu. Check what is running before you commit, as the mountain has had some uncertain seasons. Either way, finish at the Powderkeg in Ohakune. It has been feeding tired walkers and skiers for decades and provides a lively atmosphere, particularly at weekends.

Suggested stay: Two nights
Approximate drive: 110 km from Taupō, around 90 minutes

Day 10: Waitomo or Hobbiton

Heading north, you have a choice to make. Waitomo is a limestone landscape riddled with caves, the most famous of which has a ceiling covered in glow worms. You drift through in a boat, in the dark, under what looks like a galaxy. There are also blackwater rafting options if you would rather go through on an inflatable tube getting thoroughly soaked.

Hobbiton at Matamata is The Shire from Lord of the Rings, kept in full working order, with hobbit houses, round doors and the Green Dragon. Whether that appeals probably depends on how you feel about the films, but even those who arrive sceptical tend to leave charmed. Book ahead because it sells out quick in summer.

Waitomo sits more naturally on the drive from Tongariro to Raglan, with Hobbiton a slightly bigger detour east.
