And why not\u2026 there are some definite positives using toilets and showers this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aside from the obvious \u201cleave it as you found it\u201d, there\u2019s no need to empty or clean the toilet\/shower after use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s private and away from the van<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are usually good-sized so if you\u2019re big\/tall or just prefer not to feel hemmed in, this is generally a better option<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The showers are generally hot and if you\u2019re lucky powerful too. The toilets flush\u2026 just like at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your van doesn\u2019t have a fixed cubicle it probably has more space for the kitchen, dining, living and sleeping areas which you arguably use more<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And there are some pretty funky toilets to visit in New Zealand! Check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/product\/kiwi-as-toilets-book\/\">Kiwi-As Toilets<\/a> book for the noteworthy ones NZ has to offer! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"851\" src=\"https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Kiwi-As-Toilets-Book-600x851-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20074\" style=\"width:321px;height:454px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Kiwi-As-Toilets-Book-600x851-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Kiwi-As-Toilets-Book-600x851-1-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Kiwi-As-Toilets-Book-600x851-1-39x55.jpg 39w, https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Kiwi-As-Toilets-Book-600x851-1-127x180.jpg 127w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 300px, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But the downsides of not having a toilet or shower in your campervan are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You need to find a place to park up that has facilities; toilets can often be found in freedom camping spots (use one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/the-top-5-camping-apps-for-a-new-zealand-campervan-road-trip\/\">camping apps<\/a> to identify these). For more certainty and availability of amenities, campsites are great, but you\u2019ll be paying a nightly fee to stay there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you really need to go, you may find yourself stuck! You may have to go for a drive if you\u2019re somewhere remote\u2026 though if you don\u2019t mind a \u201cwild wee\u201d be discreet and leave no trace!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scenario 2 \u2013 A campervan with a fixed toilet and shower cubicle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For many people this is a must-have. They wouldn\u2019t even consider hiring, buying or building a campervan without a separate cubicle containing a toilet and shower. And it\u2019s easy to understand why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have the convenience of being able to use the facilities any time; this is particularly important if you need to get up in the night and would prefer not to traipse across a camp-site!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are the only people using them! In reality, dealing with black water isn\u2019t too bad \u2013 and if it\u2019s a big no-no, I\u2019m afraid we\u2019d probably question whether camping is really right for you!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scenario 3 \u2013 Using a portable toilet and shower<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The other popular set-up is a portable loo and an outdoor option for showering. This the best \u2013 or worst \u2013 of both worlds depending on your point of view!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the portable pull-out-and-use-anywhere-that-works toilet. In terms of the pros:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not having a separate cubicle saves a lot of space in the campervan, which can then be used for kitchen, dining, living and sleeping areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can use the loo any time\u2026 you might just need to ask your fellow traveller(s) to hop out while you hop on, so to speak!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the downside:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It may take a bit of preparation (to fill up the tank and add some chemicals etc.) so it\u2019s worth planning ahead and making a call on whether the portable loo is going to be used!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It may not be the most private option (see above!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need to clean and empty it (we\u2019ve covered this earlier).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And on the showering side of things there are some neat solutions. At the simpler end, a solar-heated water \u201cpouch\u201d with a hose can be hung up outside and provide enough running water to do the basics. Next up there are vans like <a href=\"https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/campervan\/148665\/?\">Morrison<\/a> that have the option of a roof-mounted &#8220;Road Shower&#8221; (a big black tank that stores water which is heated by the sun). This can be used al fresco or with an ensuite shower tent, complete with separate compartment for drying\/changing. The best thing to do is think about how you plan to travel and consider what\u2019s really important to you. At minimum it\u2019s probably best to hire a <a href=\"https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/self-contained-campervans\/\">\u201cself-contained\u201d vehicle <\/a>(like all Quirky Campers in NZ) so you can enjoy the fun and flexibility of <a href=\"https:\/\/www..com\/nz\/being-a-responsible-vanlifer-and-freedom-camper\/\">freedom camping<\/a>. That way at the very least your campervan will have either a portable or fixed toilet. But if you want to freedom camp for more than a few days at a time perhaps ensuring you have some form of showering facility (inside the van or outdoor) is recommended. Or just go \u201cau naturel\u201d and socially distance \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ll be mixing it up staying in campsites and visiting various towns where public and leisure facilities are easily accessible, then you probably don\u2019t need to worry too much. Enjoy the extra space in your van!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, you\u2019ll have noticed that the vans featured here aren\u2019t your standard white, factory-fitted motorhomes. There\u2019s nothing wrong with those but we prefer something with a little more style and individuality.
