Transit Custom 290 Eco-tech 2.2 diesel L1H2
This van has had 4 keepers including ourselves. Previously a working van with roof rack and ladder which was sold to the third owner (a professional carpenter) in 2021. He created a bespoke campervan interior as a pandemic project and then drove it around Europe before selling it to us. It’s a high top, so it’s comfortable to move around in but as a short wheelbase it’s surprisingly easy and car-like to drive.
It’s got the preferred and very tough 2.2 chain drive diesel engine, capable of mileages well in excess of the 150k or so on the clock. It’s got a solid MOT history with very few fails or advisories which indicates that it’s been well looked after. We arranged a comprehensive vehicle history report before we bought it (Total Car Check) with no concerns whatsover raised about ownership or insurance history. I will pass on or renew the Total Car Check report before sale. The previous owner used a private number plate, it’s now reunited with it’s original 2015 plate.
The van was serviced by the previous owner with new front discs and pads and MOT’d in April 2023. There were a couple of advisories. Once we bought it we had a full service costing £1150 at Skipton’s trusted garage and van specialist (Peter Watson Garage). The advisories were all sorted out including a new sump, rear brake discs and pads. Tyres are good all round. Next service is due May 2025 or at mileage 163k.
It’s a six speed, low revving van. It starts first time, it doesn’t smoke or make any nasty noises and it pulls really well in every gear. It can comfortably cruise at 70 mph returning around 34 miles per gallon, but it’s been equally happy burbling along the country lanes of Devon and Derbyshire (2 of our trips this season). Not ULEZ compliant.
Bodywork and chassis are in very sound condition with no MOT concerns about either. Paintwork is in very good condition, it has a couple of small dents and marks but no rust. It was T-Cutted and rewaxed early this summer, it’s been freshly washed and looks very smart.
There’s a little bit of surface rust on the rear door hinges which is common on this model, so that will need some cosmetic attention at some point. There are some rust spots on the roof rack. We’ve replaced the ladder nuts and bolts with stainless steel so they should last forever.

Gorgeous self-build by professional carpenter finished with oiled plywood worktop, cupboard fronts and drawers.
The conversion was cleverly designed to maximise storage space, so that there are many storage and underseat stowage areas in addition to the build in cupboards and drawers. It’s dry and watertight with no leaks. It was lined with insulation / vapour barrier but I don’t have any other details so I think it’s fair to say that it’s ideal for a 2 / 3 season campervan but would need some additional accessories (perhaps a diesel heater) and insulated window blinds for off-grid winter weather trips.
The conversion features a built in worktop with sink unit, a water reservoir with a foot pump and a waste water container. It’s got interior roof lighting and 240v mains for site hook ups, 3 mains plugs and dual USB charging points. Plenty of scope to add solar panels and leisure batteries if you wanted to be more off-grid. There’s a watertight Fiamma roof light and air vent. All the seat cushions and seat backs are custom made with matching roll-up curtains in cotton ticking.
It’s got an awning rail for fixing any awning compatible with Keder / Figure of 8 attachments. The van will come with our Vango Kela Low Drive Away Air Awning and all the accessories including internal carpet and groundsheet protector. It’s been used 3 or 4 times. It will also include an ATE pedal lock custom made for the van.
Genuine reason for sale and it’s sad to see it go after a short ownership. We’re looking for £12250 or near offer. We’ve got an unexpected major life change involving a house move and elderly parents, realistically it’s not going to get used in the forseeable, so we’re going to have to get back to camper van life when things have moved on. The bed was designed and installed by the previous owner, a professional carpenter. It’s made from lengths of hinged plywood and folds beautifully in and out of a floor cupboard (see photos). It comfortably fits 2 adults (I’m a six footer). The bed is created with 4 bespoke and very comfortable seat cushions / seat backs. The bed folds out and is packed away quickly and easily to that living space is restored for breakfast in the morning! The bed was originally supported on a couple of metal legs, but we’ve customised a couple of wooden boxes that provide more stable support and are great for packing stuff for trips away.
