1997 VW T4 Campervan Conversion 1.9 SWB
MOT until Sept 2025!!
Engine & Mechanical Condition:
This van features a solid 1.9L diesel engine (25-30 MPG). It’s been through careful maintenance to keep it running smoothly. Since 2020, we’ve taken care of regular repairs, including, new exhaust, brake pads, discs, suspension coils, tyres, and more. In 2023 we went even further, pulling the engine out for a full clean, repairs, gasket replacement etc. Major work includes a new clutch kit, a new timing belt (at around 152,000 miles), oil leak repairs, glow plug replacements, and more. It starts first time, drives well, and is mechanically ready for more adventures. We’ve done a lot to keep it in top shape, so it’s ready for the road (all repair paperwork available).
Bodywork Condition:
Structurally, the van is sound. In 2020, we replaced and welded all the sills and arches, which explains the different colours seen in the photos. It was fully re-undersealed in 2023 with protection added for long-term durability. The body won’t win any beauty contests, as the previous paint job was hand-done before we owned it. There’s surface rust, particularly around the front and rear windshields, and the sliding door repair by a past owner was poorly executed with filler. The passenger door rubber seal also needs replacing. Despite these cosmetic imperfections, the body is solid, and it’s great for someone who values adventure over aesthetics.
Vehicle History & Extras:
This campervan has had 13 owners over its lifetime, and we’ve carefully restored it to be a practical and comfortable adventure van. There’s no ceiling lighting other than the factory-fitted lights; we use camping lights for a cosy, off-grid feel. We prefer cooking and washing up outside using our awning, but a slide-out kitchen could easily be added to the back under the tailgate if you prefer. We did all the rebuild work ourselves, so it has a personal touch that makes it unique.
The MOT is valid until 16/09/2025, and the van will come with an Outdoor Revolution drive-away awning (with a C-bar fitted to the roof) and front windscreen cover for nighttime privacy. We’ll also include a leisure battery as we had plans to install interior plug sockets, lights, and USB ports, but we’re now moving on to our next project, a 1975 Sun Beetle.
Summary:
We’ve owned this van since 2019 and have poured a lot of love into it, from the mechanical upkeep to the complete interior renovation. We’ve had many amazing trips, both in the UK and abroad, and it’s ready for its next family to enjoy.
We’re sad to see it go, but excited to focus on our new project. If you have any questions, feel free to ask—I know this van inside and out!
Interior Restoration:
When we purchased the van, it had a basic camper setup with a rock-and-roll bed, a rear cupboard, and a fitted unit. After a few years, we decided to gut the interior to improve storage access and functionality. The entire interior was cleaned, re-insulated, re-boarded, and re-carpeted, with new laminate flooring laid over additional insulation. We hand-built custom seating units with under-seat storage, added a large storage unit behind the driver’s seat, and created side-access storage. The interior now features a walk-through layout with, a fold-out, full-width bed, removable pedestal table, brand-new 5-inch foam cushions, and a functional, cosy design.
Plenty of photo’s and videos of the re-fit if you’d like to see extra pics
The van’s bed setup is designed for convenience and maximum space when folded out. It consists of two custom-built bench units that run parallel down each side of the van, providing ample storage underneath and comfortable seating during the day.
Main Bed (Adult Bed):
Configuration: The two bench units fold out to form a full-width bed that spans the entire width of the van.
Size: When fully extended, the bed is massive, comfortably measuring around 170 cm wide x 185 cm long, providing enough space for two adults to sleep comfortably. With space for the large GSD to sleep on the floor.
Versatility: When not in use as a bed, the units function as two large bench seats, with easy side-access storage underneath. This layout is perfect for creating a spacious, open feel during the day and a comfortable bed for the night.
