VW Transporter T5 SWB
Very reluctant sale. Family owned for the last 10 years. It has taken us on many adventures from the Outer Hebrides to Slovakia and everywhere in between. It’s part of the family and used everyday to take me to work and weekend mini adventures, in between the big road trips.
Extremely reliable 1.9 tdi, still used daily.
Remapped to 150BHP on rolling road (certificate available).
Maintained regardless of cost, by mechanical engineer owner.
5 speed manual gearbox.
Cam belt changed last year. Just had a fresh oil and filter service.
The gearbox had a refurbishment in 2021
Replaced turbo in 2024
O/S Driveshaft replaced in 2025 as preventative maintenance (common transporter problem)
Drives and handles like a car, due to upgraded suspension: Eibach -50mm lowering spings and H&R anti roll bars.
Genuine VW 18″ sportline alloy wheels with Michelin Cross climate 2 tyres, rated for mud and snow. Perfect for campsites and all weathers and correctly weight rated for the vehicle.
Everything works as it should and we would happily jump in it now and drive across Europe knowing it would treat us well.
It has not been facelifted, as we like the classic T5 front. But we have changed the mirrors to T6 ones and the back lights to T5.1 items, as we feel these have enhanced its looks.
It is a very good looking van and has been well cared for. But it is not a show van and it is 20 years old. It does have some small age related marks, scratches, dings and some small rust bubbles on the rear arches and the sliding door. But nothing structural, the sills and underside is all in good condition. It has been made for road trips, adventure holidays and making memories. There is also a small crack in the poptop front window, which we made a temporary repair with some duck tape.
Only selling, as after 10 years of happy memories, we’ve decided to get a bigger van.
Adventure ready, custom crafted interior, with a mountain theme and a nod to classic vw campervans with the westfalia blue fabric on the seats.
We built this interior to be light and airy. Built on a vw shuttle, so has windows all round to enjoy the views.
It has all been hand crafted to a high standard of fit and finish using lightweight poplar ply with polished edges and an oak worktop, with the feature mountain wood artwork on the drawer fronts and Moroccan tiles inset into the oak splashback. The underside of the poptop bedboard has oak strips on it which form a decorative ceiling.
All the drawers have self closing sliders with self latching catches. So there is no need to worry about remembering to secure them before driving.
The kitchen contains a 12v 50l vitrifrigo fridge with a small freezer compartment (for ice creams). A sink with 20l of cold water and 5l waste water. There is a separate 2 burner hob, with a gas locker to hold a Campingaz 907 bottle (gas bottle not included).
For outside cooking, there is also an external bbq gas hook up and a sliding door shelf to hold a camping stove (or drinks).
Included in the sale, are an outside folding bamboo table with 4 stools which have their own storage (which have been purposely designed to maximise storage and accessibility).
Unlike most conversions, every small space has been designed to be usable storage for a family of 4. There are lots of drawers to make sure it is all accessible. Including a cutlery drawer above the fridge and inside one cupboard is storage for plates and bowls (included).
At the rear is a shelf for tea and coffee and a fruit hammock. There are recessed pockets in the worktop for games and nick nacks.
As well as the drawers and cupboards in the kitchen, there is one huge drawer under the rock and roll bed, which we made for putting all our clothes in. Under the rear part of the worktop are 2 flaps that open for lots more storage as well.
On the inside of the sliding door is a table which attaches under the worktop. The decorative oak strip under the worktop doubles as somewhere to attach the table.
The westfalia check trimmed rock and roll bed has been installed, so that the fridge can still be opened when the bed is down.
The front seats are very comfortable golf mk6 seats trimmed to match the rock and roll bed. The passenger seat is on a swivel base (with a safe underneath) and as the seats are from a 3 door car, they flip forward, making the passenger seat easier to swivel. Behind the drivers seat is a flip up worktop extension.
The van has a genuinely good off grid electrical system. We’ve not plugged in the electric hook up for years now. We have spend 6 weeks continuously off grid in this van, despite it only having 100w solar panel on the roof. We have a battery monitor and the 180Ah AGM battery bank has never dropped below 76%.
It has victron 30A B2B split charger to charge the leisure batteries whilst driving and Victron MPPT solar charge controller, which you can check the status on your phone. But to be honest, it’s so good, you can just leave it to do its thing.
It has Electric hook up, with an 8A mains charger, but this is only really for back up, as we’ve not needed to plug in for years, whilst using the van year round and in all temperatures. It power the fridge, diesel heater, USB sockets, 12v outlets and the lights without ever running out of power.
In cooler weather, we have fitted an Erberspacher diesel heater, to keep the van toasty warm. Included in the sale is a thermal windscreen cover and a custom made thermal poptop wrap. So the van can be used all year round.
There is a Fiamma F45s wind out awning attached to the side for sun and rain shelter.
As the van was a shuttle, it has 2 sliding doors. We designed the interior, so that the right door is used as we call it the “utility door”. Access to gas, water, electrics and levelling ramps is accessed without having to move things around inside the van.
At the back, inside the tailgate, we have made 2 large pull out drawers, one of which being designed specifically for storing the table and a cadac 2 cook 2 Pro (not included). Above the other large drawer is a shelf for storing the 4 stools.
There is also a pocket containing the mosquito nets, which magnet to the windows and one for the tailgate. The one for the sliding door is rolled up above it, which can be unzipped.
On the tailgate there is a genuine vw bike rack which can carry 4 bikes, or as we’ve used it a few times for carrying an inflatable kayak and paddle board in a luggage bag.
We have perfected everything for this van for road trips over the 10 years of owning it and we will truly be sad to see it go. But it is ready for its next adventure this summer.
Custom Rusty Lee rock and roll bed converts into small double 1m wide.
Poptop has bedboard which pulls down to sleep 2. It has an integrated headboard that pops up on gas struts. To give some privacy and separation for our children, we made a curtain that clips into place along the centre.
A short stretcher style bed can be made up to sleep a child across the cab. (Ideal for high wind when the poptop needs to be down)
