Bertie is quite possibly the lowest mileage Bongo in the UK – he’s just reached 37,000 km, which is less than 23,000 miles!! He’s a 2005 ‘facelift’ model – one of the last Bongos manufactured. The 2 litre petrol engine with automatic gearbox is lovely for driving around town and for long-distance cruising. Professionally converted, there’s tons of space in the back and can sleep four, and he comes with a big drive-away awning.
Before me, he was owned by a Bongo mechanic at the Dr Bongo garage in Plymouth, so he’s been extremely well looked after. They also looked after him for the previous owner. They describe him as “one of the tidiest Bongos they know of”. He’s fully undersealed from first import and redone every year since. I have over 30 photos taken in January when he was up on the lift, showing all the underneath, suspension, inside wheel arches, tyres, exhaust, etc. Please contact me if you’d like to see them.
There are no current known mechanical or bodywork issues or leaks. New cambelt 15 months ago. New main battery 10 months ago and new leisure battery 8 months ago. I’ve only had to get minor things done in the last year (e.g. bushes all round, auxiliary belts).
New Kenwood Bluetooth DAB stereo with CD player fitted 8 months ago, with speakers in front and rear, and a switch to run it off the leisure battery when the engine is off. Immobiliser, air con, electric windows.
Professional side conversion with double gas hob, sink, fridge, storage cupboard, detachable table with folding leg, large sliding storage drawer under the main seats, rear-facing two-person seat with loads of storage space underneath, two small storage cupboards above the nearside rear window. All units are made with ‘carbon’ finish with plastic protective edging. The rear-facing seats fold back and the main ones slide out to make a large double bed in a few seconds. It’s very comfy – I don’t need a mattress when sleeping on it. It’s about 200 x 95 cm, widening out to 125 cm after the unit.
Rear seats with three seatbelts have three positions for a very large boot space or to make more inside / dining space. They can be folded flat forwards or backwards, which is really useful for moving large items like furniture. 4 / 5 people can easily sit at the table for dinner.
The pop top is manual, not electric, which means no expensive motor to go wrong, with room to sleep one large or two small people upstairs (approx 100 x 220 cm). The boards and foam mattresses are included in sale.
The leisure battery charges from the main battery when driving via a split charge relay. 12v electrics with ceiling and over-cooker lights. 240v EHU with consumer unit and two sockets.
Tinted side and rear windows, with blinds on the side windows and curtain on the rear tailgate window.
All upholstery is in extremely good, very clean condition (I have no pets and am a non-smoker).
Included in the sale are a set of custom-made insulating blinds for the windscreen and cab side windows, a large drive-away awning (Outdoor Revolution Outhouse XL), more than big enough for cooking and/or sitting / sleeping in, a brand new full gas bottle (I have only made a few cups of tea since buying it), the mattress for upstairs (5cm foam). There is also a rail and curtain to go across the back of the cab, which I haven’t got round to fitting (matches the tailgate curtain).
Will come with 12 months MOT once deposit is paid.
A couple of very minor things that need attention: the water pump for the tap doesn’t work, I’ve been told they are very cheap to fix/replace. The catches on some of the blinds have worn so they don’t always stay down. I have bought replacement catches, they just need fitting. The underseat storage drawer needs a new catch (they are a couple of quid online). One of the wipers is very rusty (a common problem on Bongos) so I’ll chuck in a small tin of hammerite). And Bertie is 20 years old, so of course he has the inevitable small dings and a few spots of surface rust.
If you buy Bertie you will have the added bonus of becoming a ‘Bongonaut’! A lovely, friendly community who wave when we pass each other on the road and always have a good ol’ Bongo natter whenever we meet on a campsite. And there are super-friendly and helpful Facebook groups with regular meetups.
And most importantly, my mum says he’s the nicest and most comfortable van she’s ever been in 😀
