Hi there,
I bought the van in September 2024 and lived in it full-time, off-grid with my partner in the UK, through the autumn and winter. We’ve loved living in it, but I’m reluctantly selling as I was offered a job I couldn’t refuse, and we’ve now moved into a house. It was converted to a high standard in 2022, with quality components for off-grid living.
The LPG tank is underslung (fixed under the van), and can be filled at the petrol station pump through the external bayonet-fitting. The gas powers the heating, hot water, hob and oven. There are three heating outlets: in the bathroom, by the kitchen and by the bed. The outlets can be closed, creating more heat to the open ones, meaning you can create a hot-room in the bathroom for drying clothes, wet suits etc. The Truma boiler’s very efficient, and the van’s well insulated, meaning the gas costs are low. Through the English winter it cost us about £5 a week. A full tank usually lasted 2-3 weeks.
Electricity comes from the two leisure batteries, or the whole system can be connected to 230v mains hookup (shore power). The batteries are charged from either the solar panels, the split charge system that includes a heavy duty smart relay (charging whilst driving), or through the Renogy battery charger when on mains hook up.
I’d say that the van’s stand-out features are its large kitchen, abundance of storage space, bathroom with built-in toilet (no need to take it in and out), and its unique external appearance.
It weighs about 3.8 ton unladen. With all our stuff in it, and some petrol/water/gas/waste in the tanks, it weighed in at 4.16 ton. The max it’s allowed to weigh is 4.6 ton. It drives really well, with no problems at all getting up steep hills. This Transit model was designed as a 17 seater minibus, so it can definitely handle the weight!
