Conversion Description

My partner and I purchased this van, lovingly named Yogi, in 2020. We spent 18 months converting it into our dream tiny home on wheels and have been living in it whilst travelling around the UK, Europe and Morocco. We are so sad to have to sell our home on wheels however we are excited to embark on our next adventure and are looking to settle down (for a little while) and unfortunately do not have somewhere to keep the van long-term.

We built Yogi so that we could reduce our overheads and save more money, focusing on our travels whilst still enjoying a cosy home wherever the road took us and that is exactly what he has been for us.

We designed the layout so that the space felt as bright and open as possible whilst also creating separate zones. You enter into the convertible workspace and vanity area with access to the shower and toilet, leading through to the kitchen area with ceramic Belfast sink, triplex stove with oven and grill, 90 litre Montpelier fridge/ freezer and plenty of storage for all of your snacks. There is then the dining area with pull out table and bench seats that comfortably seat three (although we hosted many more in tight proximity), the dinette area then transforms into a king size bed with a quick pull-out section.

We wanted the space to be multi-functional but also super simple to use and we are really happy with our layout and bed system as you get the best of both worlds without sacrificing a comfortable mattress. We installed sound deadening and up to 50mm insulation in every cavity in the van, a diesel heater, a skylight and a Maxx air fan so that we could keep the temperature as pleasant as possible throughout cold winters in the UK and scorching temperatures throughout the summer in Europe and Morocco.

The van is capable of being off-grid for as long as you can make 175 litres of water last with 320 watts of solar power, battery to battery charging capabilities and 200ah lithium batteries. We built a gas storage locker that can house up to a 12-litre bottle and have a separate 10 litre diesel tank for the heater. The water system utilises a 12v pump and accumulator with fantastic pressure for both the sink and shower. We intended to purchase a compost toilet however due to the price tag we used a chemical toilet initially and ended up deciding to keep it as it was a lot easier to empty than we had imagined, we would just remove it when we showered.

The van has only done just over 100,000miles, is an absolute powerhouse and carries us like a trusty stead plus gets complimented by every mechanic it’s ever seen. It has recently had the starter motor changed, a new battery and four all terrain tyres were installed last summer. We weighed the van fully laden upon completion and before setting off on our travels and it was always well under the 3500kg max weight.
