Conversion Description

A relatively small and basic campervan for those not needing, or not wanting, a full motor home arrangement. The living space has a multi-use bunk bed frame to maximise floor volume within the van (see description below). We have used and loved it for everything from single over-nighters right through to two week road trips around the UK. The van would also be perfect for those wanting to add their own touches or create their own vision, as the basic nature means it is fully modifiable! Is the current set up luxury? No. Is it entirely practical and perfectly capable for multi-day trips? Absolutely!

The bed can be configured as either a standard over/under bunk bed, or the top bunk can be folded down to make a sofa, or the top bunk removed completely and set next to the bottom bunk to work as a double. Available floor space is maximised when in bunk bed or sofa mode. In terms of space, I am 6’3″, my partner is 5’10”, and we both can sleep in either arrangement perfectly comfortably. Roof clearance is such that she can fully stand up in the back, whereas I have to stoop a bit, but nothing that causes a problem.

There are three main storage areas:
1: Good sized storage drawers under the entire length of the bottom bunk.
2: Over-cabin storage.
3: Cubby hole type storage unit which includes a fold down table. One rear door also has another small fold out table with storage for herbs, seasoning etc.

Note that the conversion does not have any leisure electrics, plumbing, or gas installed. There’s nothing stopping any of these being installed if desired, we just didn’t need or want them for our particular needs. For our limited electric needs (charging bits and bobs, mostly) we use a Jackery powerbank. For the colder nights there’s a diesel heater under the passenger seat, and we use the Jackery to run that heater too.

One of our requirements when doing the self-build conversion was that we’d still be able have the space and flexibility to use the van as a daily run about, including travelling to/from mountain bike spots without having to disassemble the bikes. As such, keeping decent floor space available was key, hence making a double bunk arrangement.

For cooking we’ve always used a double hob camping stove with standard camping gas canisters. Stove and pot, pan, kettle, plates etc. all live in one of the under bed storage drawers (note that cooking equipment is not part of the sale). Lighting we’ve used normal rechargeable camping lights, or whatever else takes your fancy. Various battery powered fairy lights have been strung up in it over the years! Most showers have been using a portable camping shower, or wild dips wherever we’ve been.

Fully insulated with sheep’s wool. We’ve also made midge netting for the side door and front windows so they can be kept open in the Scottish summer. Such an underrated feature!

Bodywork and frame has the usual dings and scratches that can be expected for it’s age and use. We bought it second hand with 130k on the clock, so it had been driven a lot before us. Engine still runs great, and the battery is new as-of April 2026. Absolutely loads of life left in the van, but our expanding family means we are not using it anywhere near enough as a camper anymore.

Beds Description
