Melody gets her name from her previous owners- an acoustics company who looked after her incredibly well. She was run down the motorway with light loads, serviced regularly and well-maintaned – reflected in her MOT history.
She runs well and drives beautifully, with a good turning circle and acceleration and fits standard parking spaces. I’ve taken her through tiny streets in St Ives and up steep, unmade roads in the Lakes, and she’s proven a very capable and reliable vehicle. Never broken down or given me any issues whatsoever.
Unlike Sprinters and Crafters, these vans are galvanised, so should never develop rust issues.
Meet Melody – an off-grid adventure camper, built to last with a huge storage capacity, large, functional kitchen, kingsize bed and high-quality fixtures.
Frustrated with the campers available on the market, I designed and built Melody with full-time living in mind. Sick of tiny sinks and fridges, thin, uncomfortable mattresses and small beds, poorly-built or nonexistent showers, lack of storage, and low ceilings, I sought to make this van as comfortable and capable as possible.
For the kitchen, I included a large, solid bamboo countertop area for plenty of work surface, a deep stainless-steel sink and tap with pull-out spout, a three-burner hob and oven and one of the largest 12V fridge-freezers available on the market – with 130L of capacity. With the integrated draining board above the sink keeping clutter out of the way, it’s a pleasure to cook in this spacious kitchen.
The convertible shower features a suction shower head which can be placed anywhere for your convenience. It has a (removable) large Thetford porta potti and hot air ducts and extract fan, so can be used as a drying box for wet gear, and stows away easily to save space in the van.
The bed is a fixed single – convenient for solo travellers – and pulls out into an ultra-comfortable kingsize bed for couples and starfish sleepers. It features a Dormeo memory foam orthopaedic mattress. It’s just shy of 6 foot in length, and ceiling height is 6,2” – so all but the tallest can stand up straight.
Melody has one of the largest electrical systems you’ll find on any conversion, with 600W of solar panels on the roof, a 300AH Lithium battery and 2000W pure sine wave inverter – more than enough for an Instant Pot, espresso machine, mobile office and more. It has a hookup point for campsites and a 30A DC-DC charger to top-up while driving.
With the Truma Combi 4E boiler, the space heats up quickly and stays warm all day. Hot water is available on demand. Coupled with the two Maxxair vents, there is plenty of ventilation. Warm in winter and cool in summer.
