Renault Master LoLoader Luton 3850kg
Our camper was designed to be clean, spacious and light inside and have plenty of secure internal storage for our various bits of kit whether in the mountains or at the beach. Itβs a van that is very comfortable to live in for extended periods (our longest trips have been 5 weeks) with no feeling of being cramped or in the dark.
We created the rear, convertible lounge/bed area with a back that can lift up to give a clear view and real sense of being part of the view as well as having plenty of windows to give all round views and plenty of fresh air as well. This allowed us to have a large garage underneath to fit our bikes, snowboards, paddle boards etc.
The vehicle itself runs very well. We had the engine retuned to give more low down power and economy and it drives very smoothly and no problem keeping up with traffic. We average 28.5mpg as a rule. The bodywork has a few rub marks from branches, and one repaired scrape, but is otherwise also in excellent condition including the underneath. The box is double skinned aluminium with fibreglass roof.
The electrical system was designed to be self-sufficient and to be able to have the ability to charge the emtb bikes (in the garage), fridge, heater, etc. There are USB & 240v plugs throughout.
The plumbing system was kept very simple to give us what we needed, be easy to fill/empty wherever we were (not just campsites), and be internal to avoid any freezing issues when we were in the mountains in winter.
We wanted the kitchen to have a large work surface so opted not to have a fixed hob. The fridge has a decent capacity and the underfloor storage also maintains a cool temperature for food storage even in summer.
All the woodwork is very well built and feels ‘solid’ which is what we wanted rather than feeling lightweight and fragile (as motorhomes can feel).
THIS DOES MAKE THE VEHICLE RELATIVELY HEAVIER SO FOR THIS REASON AND TO CARRY THE KIT WE WANT, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN UPRATED TO 3850KG REQUIRING A C1 LICENCE.
For those who aren’t aware, any vehicle between 3500kg-7500kg requires a C1 licence (you automatically have it if you passed your car driving test before 1997. The licence qualification is a 3 day/Β£1000 course), and of course, once you’ve got it, it’s for life. Itβs increasingly going becoming the norm for the motorhome market now it looks like.
There is a caravan style awning rail with two awnings (large & small).
The van has proved to be an extremely comfortable base for our various adventures, and a very sociable one for festivals and camping with the ability to comfortably seat 6 around the table.

Designed to be self-sufficient for 3-4 days periods at a time:
– 800w Victron inverter
– CTEK DC-DC charger/MPPT solar controller with vehicle battery trickle charge
– 160w solar panels
– 2 x 130ah AGM leisure batteries
– underfloor/under sink/shower storage of water containers. We operate with 10l sink water & waste containers, 4 x 5l drinking water containers, 10l shower water container. We can add collapsable containers for extra but find that the containers are so easy to refill anywhere we just use those.
– internal shower cubicle also houses the portaloo cassette toilet (that we take out when showing!).
– diesel heater with separate 10l fuel tank in garage. We have one of the air vents into the shower cubicle to allow us to use this as a (very effective) drying room.
– we use a portable induction hob and butane camping stove for cooking and heating water depending on being off-grid or on hook-up. The kitchen area has excellent ventilation and carbon monoxide alarm.
1 x king bed (196x163cm) that converts from 6 seater sofa and dining table
1 x single bed (186x66cm),
