‘Liv’ is a lovingly crafted Renault Trafic 2016 LWB campervan that is built with reliability, safety and comfort in mind. Named after and dedicated to my grandmother.
Safety: Designed from the ground-up to be a fully electric, safe and silent campervan, Liv has no LPG gas fitted whatsoever. That means peace of mind and no worry about gas build-up while sleeping from leaking pipes, or children leaving a gas hob on accidentally. Unlike gas hobs that remain hot long after cooking, the energy-efficient induction hob is cool to the touch within seconds preventing the risk of burns and scalds.
Cooking: Liv comes with an 1800W two-ring portable induction hob, which is both energy efficient and safe for children as it is cool to the touch just seconds after powering off. It also comes with a 500ml fast-boil kettle and a five metre extension lead for cooking outside. At the rear there is a pull-out unit for cooking with a stove or preparing food.
An 18L 12V compressor fridge/freezer provides space for food and drinks to be kept cool even in the height of summer, operating quietly throughout. A solid oak table can be put up or down in seconds thanks to a quick adapter table leg in the middle of the living space, with the ability to swivel 360 degrees for eating, entertaining or board games.
Washing: A kitchen sink and tap in the kitchen space provide hand and face washing facilities and the space to wash up plates and cutlery. Powered by a Seaflo submersible water pump there is a 25L fresh water tank and 12.5L waste water tank.
Bathroom: A portable camping toilet is stowed in the benches for all toilet requirements and a separate portable grey liquid waste toilet is used for night-time requirements (ideal for children and those who need night-time breaks).
Power: Off-grid ready, everything inside the living space is fully electric. Powered by a 300Ah LifePo4 Roamer battery and a Victron Multiplus II 3kW inverter/charger, ‘Liv’ can power almost anything you want to take with you, whether a two-ring induction hob for cooking, 230V hair dryer, coffee machine and more. A double mains socket provides 230V power and 2x integrated USB-A sockets provide power for mobile devices. 12V cigarette lighter sits in the cab area for mobile charging and comes with 1x USB-A and 2x USB-C charging ports.
If hooking up via the shore power inlet on the side of Liv, 230V power runs through the van to recharge the leisure battery and simultaneously delivers 230V power to the double mains sockets inside the van so you can use your regular appliances whilst the battery is charging. The input is fully protected to National Caravan Council standards so you and all the components are safe, even when hooking up to mains electric abroad.
Liv recharges using a Victron Orion TR-Smart 12-30 which recharges the lithium ion leisure battery at 30Ah, so the battery can charge from flat in 10 hours from running the van alone. Due to this fast recharge and the fact that have never managed to run the battery down below 40% we have never needed to install solar or even recharge on electric hook-up when at a campsite. We have always found the battery is recharged fully when driving during the day, especially when taking a tour like the NC500, though solar panels and an MPPT solar charger could easily be fitted into the existing system.
Heating: Two methods of heating in Liv provide the ultimate in comfort. Electric underfloor heating operated by the thermostat removes the chill from crisp winter mornings and feels warm underfoot, ideal when making that first cup of coffee or getting warmed up after a brisk hike. A 5kW Diesel heater warms the space efficiently and quickly and is stowed away under the bench with a removable magnetic lid for easy refuelling and can be operated via the thermostat control or the remote control from bed.
Lighting: Three energy efficient but powerful LED strip lights illuminate the living space. Protected by a light diffuser they are safe for those with eye problems — something that many installers do not realise is a legal safety requirement. A soft white light provides a comfortable, natural, warmer tone and the lights are 100% dimmable and can be operated by one of two controls (a control inside the door or a remote from bed).
Sleeping: The bed has dimensions of 163cm W x 190cm L which sits between a King and Super King size standard bed at home. Suitable for all sizes, even campers over 6ft and can comfortable sleep three (combined with three seat-belted seats in the front of the van).
Windows: Panoramic views can be seen all around the vehicle with privacy tinted windows running down both sides and the barn doors. A sliding window above the kitchen area provides ventilation. Daytime privacy is provided by the tint and night-time privacy with the black-out roller blinds all around and a curtain between the living space and the cab.
Storage: Both benches double as huge storage areas and the kitchen unit also has storage space for food and drinks. Overhead cabinets provide storage for smaller items such as the kettle, tea, coffee, hot chocolate or herbs and spices. The passenger-side bench also opens out the rear for outdoor cooking or preparation surface. The front passenger seats also have in-built storage, accessible by lifting up the seat top or from the front, perfect for wellies, muddy boots and other items. Dashboard bins can store maps, books and travel items, plus deep bins in the door cards are suitable for water bottles, ice scrapers and other miscellaneous items.
Versatile: Liv is the perfect family camper and has a huge living space and can easily double as a moving vehicle should you require it. With the bed folded away full 2440 x 1200 sheets of timber can be safely loaded into the back, with longer planks and wood strips of up to 3.5m placed in the centre with the middle seat folded down. With the bed set up you can easily transport large appliances for the home like fridge/freezers, washing machines and large furniture if required.
Inbetween King size and Super King size, the bed has dimensions of: 163cm W x 190cm L. It comfortably sleeps three (handy for three seat-belted seats in front). Extremely comfortable even for those with back issues. Comfortably sleeps even the tallest of campers due to its home bed-like dimensions and quality.
