This Mercedes Vario 813D was originally bought as a camper conversion. Although the build quality and specification wasn’t to my preference and therefore the decision was made to strip it back to a bare shell and start again. I have included photos of the build process along with the finished product. It’s been a labour of love making this van over the last two years and I’m hoping someone can have the adventures in it that it deserves.

261,000 miles. Or to look at it another way, just over a quarter of the way through its life. These engines last forever!

This van has been in my care since December 2020. It is registered as a camper van with the DVLA and is a class 4 MOT (most common and can be MOT’d at any garage). It has passed both MOT’s I’ve had without a single advisory. There has only ever been one mechanical issue of a faulty alternator, which has been replaced with a brand new one as of July 2022. When the van was purchased I had new rear brakes fitted and a new solenoid for the air brakes. Receipts can be provided for these.

It is a two seater with upgraded Mercedes G Class full leather and adjustable seats. Much more comfortable than the truck seats in it before. The camper sleeps two (one fixed double bed) with a Simba Hybrid mattress, very comfy!

If you’ve read up about these vans you’ll know they suffer very badly from rust issues. This has been a constant game of catch up whilst i’ve owned the van and i’m pleased with the condition it’s now in. The entire chassis, wheel arches, walls and foot steps have been rust treated, painted with red oxide rust protection paint and slicked to protect it from water ingress. This process took close to three months to complete and was done to protect the life of this van.
I’ve spent £1800 at the bodyshop getting an entire side of the exterior rust repaired and resprayed. Along with a backdoor rebuild and respray. There’s no question to how good of an example this van is compared to the usual level of rust found on a Mercedes Vario.
That said, there are still areas where rust is creeping through. These are thankfully only cosmetic and will be down to the new owners preference on whether they are addressed by them/you.

BUYER INFORMATION
This conversion is priced according to the market of similar campers. This is a very high spec Mercedes Vario, however, there are parts of it which are unfinished. The bathroom will require completion (tiling and painting) along with fitting three further solar panels plus decking to the roof rack. I return to the UK in early May (van is permanently in the UK), so negotiations will need to take into account these items can be finished then or a discount made if you would like to take the van sooner.

Beds Description

This van can sleep two people with a fixed double mattress. Due to the interiors size the double mattress was cut slightly smaller to be able to fit. I am 5ft10 and fit, with space, to sleep horizontally in the van. Maximum height would most likely be 6ft to sleep like this without going slightly diagonal across the mattress.

The mattress is a Simba Hybrid. A very good breathable memory foam mattress including memory foam pillows. I’m much more comfortable sleeping in the van than in my own house! Above the bed is a large opening skylight (Dometic Heki 2), perfect for laying in bed and watching the stars. Blackout blind and mosquito blind are also built into this.

Bed has a triple light switch for turning off all ceiling lights in the van without the need of getting up and also USB fast chargers integrated into the headboard for the two people sleeping beside each other. The roof fan remote is also hung discreetly by the bed so, again, no need to get out of bed to adjust.
