Nelson: Much loved Mercedes Sprinter built for off grid long term travel

Conversion Description:
Nelson was built in spring 2018 for a six-month North American road trip. It was designed with ease of living in mind – maximising usable space and comfort whilst not compromising storage or functionality.

The walls, floors and ceilings are all insulated using a mixture of Rockwool and Kingspan style insulation (25mm & 50mm).

It has a window on the driver’s side with a sliding section installed by Van Window Specialists Ltd.
For ventilation, it has a Fiamma Turbo-Vent 40 vent/fan with thermostatic control.

A movable gas hob that can be used inside and outside the van, which hooks up to the main van gas tank, to maximise valuable surfaces/storage underneath.
The gas tank is in a gas locker in the rear of the van with a drop-out vent.
48L 12v fridge (Dometic CoolMatic CRX 50) built into the kitchen cabinets, with an optional small freezer compartment built in.
20L fresh and grey water tanks with an electric pump for the built-in sink on the kitchen counter.
A separating composting toilet, which is hidden underneath one of the bench seats, is still usable when the bed is fully extended.

12v & 240v electric system
– 200w solar panel with MPPT charge controller
– Brand new 2 x 110 Ah AGM batteries – installed in Oct 2025
– Double UK standard plug sockets (240v) installed on an in-line RCD on a 1000w inverter
– Duritc split charge relay to additionally charge the batteries whilst the van is running
– Zoned lighting in main area and the bed area
– USB and 12v sockets
– Gas alarm

Bench seating with an adjustable Lagun swivel table.
Full-size folding double bed, when not in use, the end folds down to become the back of the bench seating.
Tons of immediately accessible storage. We lived in it with all of our belongings and never ran out of storage space.
A ginormous garage underneath the bed which can store multiple bikes, camping equipment, climbing gear and spare water etc.
Roof box installed vertically on rear door offering extra storage (great for storing wetsuits!).
Curtain separating the cab and the living area.

The windscreen has a couple of chips, which have never posed a problem on MOTs and have been there for years and not gotten any worse so we didn’t think it worthwhile to replace the windscreen.
