Below we have further details of our van conversion.
Van base-
We first prepared the van by treating any rust and imperfections. This was followed by sound deadening and insulation. Our chosen insulation has very high thermal values which we have personally tried and tested before. Reflective vapour barrier sits on top of the insulation which is vital to remove the possibility of any condensation build up. The van has been kitted out with five windows, three of which are opening maximising natural light and air flow throughout.
Kitchen-
The kitchen has been lovingly crafted by hand and made from lightweight pine to create an eye catching and practical work space. Shaker style doors painted in an uplifting shade of yellow embellish the kitchen frontage and are mirrored throughout the conversion. Marble effect compact laminate has been used to finish the countertop because of its durability and clean look. There’s an ample amount of space for cooking and all other daily needs. We have chosen to pair the countertop with a simple black glass 2 burner hob. On the opposite end of the kitchen counter there is a deep brushed steel sink which is perfect for everyday needs, combined with a black mixer tap and a stainless steel soap dispenser. The work space is well lit from 2 adjustable spotlights which run on their own dimmer switch. A 50L SMAD 12v fridge has been installed capable of holding all essentials.
Additional benefits:
Integrated waste bins
handmade Italian tiled splash-back
Good sized storage cupboards and cutlery drawer
Dining area/Single bed-
Opposite the kitchen we have designed a comfortable area which provides ample space for dining and can additionally be used as a single bed. This area is well lit by 2 opening bunk windows which allow a cool breeze throughout the van. The cavities under the seats have been left empty to provide a good amount of storage space. We have made a beautiful table top which has been burnt and varnished to create an earthy finish which accents other elements of the van. The table top is removable and lowers down to make the single bed or can be used for dining in the sofa area of the van. Between the dining area and the sofa we have built a top to floor cupboard which holds the majority of our clothes and benefits from the capability of hanging items. A full length mirror has been installed on the door and a compact chemical toilet is located at the base of the cupboard. In this cupboard you will also find the 12v amplifier which powers the surround sound system controlled via Bluetooth allowing you to always play your music whilst on the road.
Heating-
We have installed an efficient 8kw self contained diesel heater which is perfectly capable of warming the van on a cold winters night. There are 2 heating outlets in the van and it comes complete with a digital thermostat display which allows you to control and set the temperature.
Gas-
A gas locker has been installed in the base of a kitchen cupboard which holds 2 x 907 camping gaz bottles. In the locker you will also find a gas shut off valve and a gas drop out vent for safety. Additionally a carbon monoxide alarm has been fitted nearby.
Shower-
The Camplux gas boiler will be located at the end of the kitchen when in use. We have installed an outlet water tap which is plumbed into the water system and an outlet quick release gas hose to supply the boiler. Simply connect the boiler to these connections and you will have instant hot water for an outdoor shower (refer to pictures). Shower curtains are provided to give privacy which can be attached to the door hooks to create a screen.
Living area/ Double Bed-
From our previous experience we decided that functionality and comfort are two things we would not compromise on. Taking this into account we decided a pull out sofa was the way to go. This area is well lit via 2 wall lights and 4 spot lights. We have also fitted an opening side door window and a Dometic roof vent to enhance the natural light. By doing this it maximises the views when sipping your morning coffee and it gives an open space to socialise. All the cushions in the van are made from memory foam and upholstered with faux suede removable covers. Not only is the sofa an amazing space to relax it also doubles as a pull out double bed capable of sleeping 2 tall adults and the possibility of one more underneath. Plenty of storage for bedding and possessions can be accessed from the hand crafted sliding doors beneath. On the bulk head wall you will also find a large over head cupboard which allows another large space for storage.
Water-
Opposite the sofa you will find the water storage compartment capable of holding 75L of fresh water. We have also installed a 90L waste water tank beneath the van which can be emptied via the tap at the skirt of the vehicle. Equipment such as the shurflo water pump, shurflo filter and accumulator are found in the bottom of the sink cupboard.
Electrics-
We have installed an efficient electrical setup which is easy to use and minimal to maintain. The system has been designed with off grid travel its priority meaning you will very rarely need to connect to mains electricity. Perfect for anyone looking to hit the wilderness and escape modern day life.
