Vauxhall Combo
I’m sadly selling my beloved little camper as I’m moving to Australia for some time.
I’ve had her since the beginning of covid and was originally using her to run a small gardening business. After a couple of years, I built a small frame, stuck a mattress in the back, and took her around France for 2 weeks with my best friend. It was basic and cramped, but we had such a good time, and that trip inspired me to convert her further into the mini camper she is now, with space to sit and relax, a fold down headboard for extra sleeping space, a pull out draw/cooking counter, an internal table top with storage underneath and extra storage under the seats.
She’s fully insulated with fleece wool and Dodo van insulation pads, and lined with a grey felt for extra warmth and comfort at night. She’s also fitted with roof bars so there’s the option of adding a roof box or strapping down a kayak, surfboard, or whatever toys you like playing with!!
I completed all the modifications myself and I loved the whole process. I’m sad I wont get to use her much in her newly converted condition since I’m moving to Australia, but I hope you get to use and love her as much as I have, and create many more memories on your future adventures.
She’s perfect for weekends away and exploring cities, and since she’s a smaller van, she’s easy to drive and find parking anywhere.
As an ex-BT van prior to my purchase she’s always been extremely well taken care of and drives like a dream. I’ve never had any issues with her, just like I hear many others with these slightly older combos have also said.
I haven’t had the time to add a leisure battery, and even though I’ve found it’s not necessary for smaller weekend getaways, I have converted her with that in mind for future owners so there’s plenty of space to locate one behind the driver seat if you’d like. I also have extra materials, MDF and van felt if you’re handy like me and would like to build any extra shelving above the table or make any other additions if you’d like. If you don’t want it, no problem… just an option if you’d like it.
Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions.
If I don’t answer your calls it may be because I’m already in Aus, so if you email me I can put you in contact with my stepdad who’ll be available to show you around if you’d like to take a look 🙂
First I wanted to make sure it was warm and cosy, so I stripped her back, cleaned her to the bones, and then insulated with fleece wool and Dodo van padding insulation.
Next I lined her with a grey van felt lining which I also later used to cover the memory foam cushions to match.
I built a sturdy frame with 3×2 timbers, finished with a combination of MDF and ply to hide the frame, with a fold up/down headboard which creates a longer bed for sleeping.
I saw some other vans with a rear pull out draw that could be used as an extra cooking worktop which i loved, so I did the same.
The seating is L shaped which has enough headroom to sit and hang out during the day, and then folds out into a larger bed at night.
Finally i added a vinyl flooring which is easy to wipe down if it gets muddy or dirty.
I thought about adding a leisure battery and potentially a solar panel on the roof, but I didn’t feel it was necessary and also didn’t have time as I’m leaving soon, but there’s plenty of space to locate a leisure battery behind the driver seat if you’d like to do so yourself.
I built this van with space in mind so that she could be used as a relax/chill space in the day, and folds out into a wider bed at night by placing the top of the pull out draw in the space between the table top and the seat. The back cushion then can be place on top to increase the size of the bed as shown in the photos.
I cut a thick memory foam mattress to shape for the cushions making it one of the comfiest sleeps of my life… no joke!!
It’s a large spacious sleep for one, and still plenty of room for two. My girlfriend and I have enjoyed some lovely cosy nights together.
