Vehicle Description

This van has been an absolute work-horse and apart from a broken fan belt, never broken down once. Driving carefully I usually get 350-370 miles out of a full tank. The engine is in great shape with plenty of miles left on the clock, all electrics and equipment inside are in good working order. It was originally white and resprayed silver so the double protection has prevented a lot of (not all) rust issues to the bodywork. The underside was another story, I paid for £5,200 of rust repair and then total underside Dinitrol treatment by South West Rust Proofing – official suppliers – so it’s protected for a long time (there is a one year check up and top-up available for transfer to the new owner for use until the end of April). Picture included of just after the work was completed. As well as other additions and repairs detailed below I’ve also given it two major services since I had it. I have complete service records for the time I’ve had it and a large amount, but not all, from previous owners.

It has been looked after over the years by the various owners and by me – in fact, I have put a lot of money into this van – almost the same as what I paid for it. It became a labour of love, the work being on the whole cosmetic. I was earning good money during the period, with low overheads, and didn’t have an issue doing so. Now because my lifestyle and career has changed (it’s time to settle down), sadly, I’m going to sell.

This will have a new MOT from 8th April.

Conversion Description

I have lived off-grid in this van full-time since January ’23 (ending late Feb ’24) and travelled the UK and parts of Europe in it. The build is very solid and practical while also being attractive (to me) and comfortable. I redecorated when I purchased it, sanding down the beige wood stain and applying a transparent, water repellant varnish and painting ceiling and cabinets with chalk paint (hard wearing), as well as other little flourishes. It was designed to accommodate two adults, and set up for full-time living and/or long trips off-grid.

The list below is pretty exhaustive but I want to be as transparent and honest as possible so there are no surprises once you get it.

Main Features:

– Large, fixed bed with a custom memory foam mattress (https://customsizebeds.co.uk/). Purchased in Nov. ’22. In good condition and clean. Width: 122, Length: 171, Thickness: 13. Firmness Rating: Medium. Paid £260

– Auto-term 2KW Diesel Air Heater plumbed into the fuel tank – it’s very cheap to run and has seen me comfortably through -5c nights.

– Kitchen with a two-stove gas hob (LPG, 6KG Gas-It in aluminium lined box in garage with external filling point – includes gas safety certificate), tap with running water (Shurflo water pump + Fiamma accumulator), Domestic Waeco CRX50 fridge-freezer (45L capacity, quiet + super efficient), in very good condition. Down-pipe used to have 25L grey water tank which I removed, currently drains freely but there is space to have one installed.

– Solar-powered 12v electric system to charge phones via USB sockets, along with the lights, fridge etc. Victron Mini Multiplus 500W inverter for laptops etc. Includes auto split relay to charge while driving. Hook-up also possible via external plug – automatically switches once plugged in. Solar provided by two solar panels (240W & 100W) on roof, going into 2x 100W AmpH AGM leisure batteries, purchased in January ’22 and well looked after – never taken below tipping point. Solar charge controller is a Victron 75/15.

– 70L Fiamma water tank with shower head attachment (unheated), suitable for showering out of the back (or cleaning boots)

– A LOT of storage space: shelves throughout, overhead with net covering, 2 kitchen cabinets (although one houses a lot of the elections, batteries etc), 4 cabinets next to bed, main drawer and 3 pop-out drawers as well as a stealth/hidden slot for hiding expensive items. There is plenty of room under the bed – the previous owner used to store bikes here with a sliding tray, so can be adapted to do that again – or whatever you need the space for!

Also included:

– Trelino Compost Toilet (Origin S) inc. compostable bags, 1.5L scent blocker litter and effective microorganism liquids. I used this only as a last resort, probably 4-5 times – it’s spotlessly clean. RRP: ~£450
– Wireless Reverse Camera (Auto-Vox M1W) – triggers automatically when put into reverse.
– Fiamma Roof Vent with 2-way fan
– Revolving captain’s chair, passenger side only
– Rhino Rear Step
– Wild Earth Camo Awning
– Hook up cables (1x10m, 1x5m) + adaptors
– Window covers for privacy – not in great condition, functional but could do with replacing.

Main additions and repairs since it’s been in my ownership:

– November 2022: Major service including EGR valve replacement and multiple other small fixes totalling £1,700. All rear door seals replaced around the same time.
– January 2023: Windscreen removed, rust repaired and resealed as well as driver step replaced due to rust. Also adjustments made to back door as wasn’t sealing correctly. Carried out by Motts Body Repair (https://www.mottsbodyrepair.co.uk/)
– January 2023: Installation of Auto-term 2KW Diesel Air heater and replacement of AGM Leisure batteries (2x100W). Carried out by Quattro-Tech Van Werks (https://www.qt-vanwerks.co.uk/quattro-tech/)
– February 2023: Installation of Victron Mini Multiplus 500W Inverter and upgrading and tidying of electrics, as well as replacement of the rear floor and replacement vinyl due to rot (the wheel arches had pinholes and water had been going in over time). Also carried out by Quattro-Tech Van Werks.
– April 2023: Following the rust being flagged there was £5,200 worth of rust repair to the underside and total underside rust proofing protection using Dinitrol treatment, all done by South West Rust Proofing (https://www.southwestrustproofing.co.uk/).
– July 2023: Replaced speedo/instrument cluster. A known issue with these vans. Work carried out by Cartronix (https://cartronix.co.uk/)
– October 2023: Replacement front tyres
– November 2023: Replacement fan belt
– January 2024: Offside front bearing replaced + other small fixes during major service

Self-repairs:

– Roof vent resealed, rust repair (fibreglass) to roof and sills by wheels on both sides + filler on some scratches to the panel driver-side + spray can respray & lacquer. I’ve been touching up the wheel arches with rust protection paint to keep them from turning but structurally they’re all in very good condition.

General condition points to be aware of:

It’s 18 years old so expect some general wear and tear…

– Previous service flagged cracks in rear diff and engine, they said it’s to be expected of a vehicle of this age
– 2 ~1 inch tears in passenger seat; one near headrest, one on seat itself
– Driver arm-rest leather is flaking, has duck-tape over it currently to prevent it from getting worse
– Rust on driver side front wing, around 5x15cm, solid, not spongy
– Driver window locks if lowered too low
– Back door handle needs TLC and needs a firm push at the top when closing to ensure tight seal
– Diesel heater can sometimes need a couple of cycles to turn on when especially cold – happens rarely
– When cold can be sticky to get into 1st (gearbox fine as gears shift easily with engine off)
– Radio aerial snapped (but seal undamaged)
– Replaced front tyres in October but they’re fairly cheap (was in a pinch in Portugal)
– Fibreglass repairs to roof, solid and watertight but not attractive
– Remote lock control could do with replacing but still functional
– Driver side panel could do with some attention, structurally ok but not consistent with the rest of the lines and paintwork – there have been repairs to paintwork that needs wet sanding and a polish to the lacquer
– Exhaust casing is losing a layer, has passed an MOT like this but will need replacing eventually
– Right wing mirror has a bodged repair to the frame, but is solid
