This bespoke handcrafted conversion is fitted with top spec appliances, allowing you to go off grid indefinitely without needing to worry about power! After graduating from a Masters in Mechanical Engineering I chose to convert the van over the last year and test it out at various spots across the UK to ensure it was fit for purpose.
The 12v 36L Dellonda fridge/freezer, remains on 24hrs a day, and the batteries rarely dip below 90% even first thing in the morning. The decision to use a movable 2 burner gas hob allows for large amounts of counter space at all times when not cooking and the flexibility to either cook indoors, partially outdoors on the fold-out table or outside the van entirely in good weather! The Cadac 2-Cook 2 Pro also comes with flat and ridged griddle plates, perfect for cooking whilst minimising space they take up in storage when not in use.
The maxxair fan fitted above the kitchen area is perfect for extraction during cooking. It also provides a great source of air-conditioning β all you need to do is press a button to turn the fan the opposite way to push air into the van. There are controls on the fan itself and a remote installed beside the head of the bed.
Overhead Cab storage space and overhead cabinets above the countertop provide ample food storage and a series of storage boxes and baskets combine hard and soft spaces to suit all needs. Soft storage in the form of a cargo net is also installed at the foot of the bed to avoid taking up space when not needed.
The Thetford Portaloo 345 can be stored under the removable bench seating or pushed into the underbed storage area out of the way.
A skimboard table mounted on a Lagun table leg can either provide a table top anywhere in the seating area or be mounted beside the bed, perfect for working/watching films in a more comfortable setting.
Fully insulated with a combination of sheepβs wool and PIR board, the van holds heat extremely well and is always cool in the summer. Combined with the maxxair fan, it allows for temperature to be controlled and maintained whatever the weather. A full vapour barrier was also installed to aid with moisture management.
Water system:
3 x 25 litre fresh water tanks, making for easy refilling up to 75L capacity.
1x 25 litre waste water tank to minimise storage space taken up by grey water.
The sink has a cold water kitchen tap and a pullout shower hose. A further 4m hose can be found under the sink, allowing the same water supply to be used outside of the side or the back doors.
Electrics:
260 amp hour AGM battery
Maxxair Fan with controller by the bed
175 Watt Solar power
Renogy 50 amp DC/DC charge controller w/ MPPT charges the batteries fully after just a short drive
300 Watt inverter providing 240v to anywhere in the van via an extension cable
2 x twin 12v usb sockets (one beside the bed) plus the cab has been upgraded to be capable of fast charging while driving
2 x 12v cigarette lighter sockets installed
12/24/230v dual zone compressor fridge/freezer
Renogy Bluetooth monitor for the batteries via an app on your phone, allowing you to monitor the power coming through the solar panel, the alternator, and the status of the batteries.
No mains Hookup is needed for this van, she runs perfectly off-grid. The Solar Power mounted to the roof deck and the vanβs alternator charge the leisure battery. The solar panels alone are great and keep the batteries above 90% even with the fridge/ freezer and Maxxair fan constantly on, along with charging a number of devices. I have been away for a number of weeks without having to worry about the power I was using.
Underneath the fixed bed is a huge amount of storage space, usually home to the following with lots of extra space: 29β mountain bike (fork mount fitted), 185cm skis, 6β surfboard, kitesurfing board and a quiver of kites.
The cab is clean and seats are in good condition. Waterproof seat covers also supplied as seen in the photos. The double passenger seat has had a swivel base fitted so that it can turn through 360 degrees (and lock in at 180 if required).
DAB radio with hands free installed, allowing Bluetooth music playback, and a reversing camera with display in the cab.
The solar panel is fixed to a roof deck, made out of quality treated larch, leaving approximately 200 x 160cm of lounging space for anything from stargazing to sunset drinks. The timber structure was constructed as one piece and is detachable from the Matt black painted Vanguard roof rack if required.
In order to be able to access the roof but have no unwanted attention a telescopic ladder is fitted under the double bed.
