Conversion Description

Peregrine lwb Citroen Relay
We are so looking forward to meeting Peregrine’s new owner. If you have followed us you will know that the people who take our campers very often become part of the Rustic Simplicity community…we all have the same ideals…that camping should be simple, and low tech. Our vans are designed with ultimate comfort and spaciousness in mind, and you will not find lots of gadgets. Having said that, she does have a proper compressor fridge which is powered by 240 w of solar, backed up by a split charge system, but that’s about as complicated as it gets…she is an off grid camper, taking her clues from the way things used to be when life was slower and much more simple.
James and I have been creating hand made campervans for around 6 years now. About a year ago we made an interesting discovery. If you build the van on 2 levels, and have a raised bed/seating area at the back, you can not only have a wonderfully comfy social space, but also create loads of really useful storage, and a huge boot space. By splitting the areas like this it is possible to have a really relaxed camping experience without getting under one another’s feet.
The word Peregrine indicates a wanderer…an adventurer and also reminds us of our daughter who is a falconer!
Peregrine has a memory foam mattress which I have covered in a luxury wool based fabric in a deep reddish orange…this makes for a very warm feel. It is trimmed with a dandelion tapestry type fabric, (because we all love nature!) The seating area is super comfy and so is the bed….there are various ways you can use this — depending on your height and how many are camping. Then if it is your thing, you can leave this made up and still have a dining area next to it. It is possible to sleep across the van if you are under 6 ft tall, or you can use the beds as singles, each one is 6ft 2 inches. By pulling out the centre part and adding the 3 bolsters which sit across the back cushion you can make it up into a super king sized bed. The bedding stores in one of the deep floor hatches (next to the wine cellar!). For Peregrine we kept the curtains and blinds simple and natural, featuring hessian, linen and leather trim.
There are also 2 pull out drawers in the bed area which are velvet lined and plenty large enough for all of your clothes.
There is a shelf above the bed, where you can stash games, books and baskets of stuff.
The layout means someone can languish in bed with copious cups of tea (hopefully me haha!) while the other person can sit in the kitchen area looking at maps and planning the day’s trip. As the evening draws on, the back doors can be opened onto the view, and you can enjoy the outside from the comfort of the incredible comfy couches.
She has one touch reading lights with charging points, (I have made some little leather pouches to take your phone while it is charging up). There are lights under the kitchen cupboards and a central welcome light operated from the side door. The ones you will use most though are the twinkling fairy lights which add such a magical feel to the space.
One of the really special things about Peregrine is her copper stove – you can keep really warm, (it is totally silent, working from a drip feed diesel tank), and get creative with learning how to cook on her aga type hot plate….at the very least you might try toasting some crumpets on there….but also I have simmered soups and stews on mine, cooked a ham, and in the colder months have the kettle always on the boil!
The lagun leg style table stores over the deep, practical sink, and then swings out for you to use for dining. You can just swing it out of the way, or dismantle it completely…it’s up to you.
The kitchen and most of the woodwork has been created from reclaimed whisky barrel oak, each piece carefully cut, shaped and finished to fit her quirky spaces. She has a cutlery drawer and plenty of cupboard space above and below.
She has a deep sink, with fridge underneath, as well as water storage. There are extra water bottles in the boot. We have deliberately used small ones so that they are easy to carry. Changing them is very simple. James has made lots of other little storage areas on the walls so that you can display your favourite dishes and other personal items – the kind of things that make you feel at home. (We always love seeing what people do with the vans once they take them home!).
There is a lovely compost toilet hiding under that seat at the side door, and a portable shower.
The cab has been upholstered and I have padded the seats for extra comfort.

Peregrine has been built in a very magical space and people always comment on the positive energy they feel when they come and sit down in our rustic campervans. They are a sanctuary, a place to escape to, a retreat where everything can just slow down and where you feel safe and protected. This is what people have told us. You might like to have a look at Kim’s comments…she bought Fable, our last camper and was kind enough to write a few words which you can read here. https://rusticsimplicity.co.uk/fablea-dream-come-true-for-kim/

Beds Description

The bed is made from the U shaped seating area and can be put up in just a couple of minutes. Simply pull out the centre base, pop the 3 bolster cushions in which are stored at the back, and you have a super king sized bed which is 5 ft 6 inches x 6 ft 2 inches. Or one person can sleep across the back if you are not tall…in which case you could use it as a ‘fixed’ bed. Alternatively you could sleep as 2 single beds. There is a huge hatch in the floor where you can store a large duvet, and pillows are stored inside zipped cushions which are part of the seating area. The bed?seating area is ultra comfy as it is made from an Ikea memory foam mattress. Whenever anyone enters the van and sits down, a huge grin forms on their face as they relax into the soft cushions.
