Say hello to Stanley, my beloved Ford Transit studio on wheels. I converted this from an empty commercial van and I am extremely reluctant to let him go! However, I cannot justify keeping him now I have settled in a house with a workshop space so this chapter in my life has come to an end.
Are you at the beginning of a new chapter though? I’d love him to have a new home with someone who wants a peaceful hideaway that nourishes the soul, on wheels!
This van would suit someone who is wanting a space to take away to make art in, write in or make things in. He could even be used in this way while parked up at home. I work in leather and textiles and Stanley was my mobile workshop for a while as well as where I lived when volunteering on organic farms around the UK. The conversion was designed to meet this need, so there is lots of storage space for books and materials, as well as bedding, cookery supplies and other bits and bobs. Stanley is not your usual lay out of bed in the back and small work surfaces, space has been given over for writing, making art and cooking.
The van has been insulated using Cosy wool insulation purchased from Celtic Sustainables. This sits on top of a self adhesive foam, designed to minimise condensation and then topped off with silver bubble wrap insulation, sealed with aluminium tape.
The work surfaces and some shelves were made using cedar or pine from a woodland in Herefordshire. The cladding is pine. All lightweight but hard wearing and smells great too!
175w solar panel
2 x USB charge sockets
LED strip light and switch above bed
LED spotlights on separate switches so you can light different areas of the van
submersible pump tap
water and waste water 12 litres each (I tended to carry fresh water around and use the tank for washing up)
gas hob (propane) fitted by Gas Safe engineer but needs testing again before use
Split charge relay so the leisure battery is charged up while driving
Small double bed. I lived in this van for a year and never pulled the bed out. My partner and I lived in the van for a year and managed fine. The bed is 6 foot long (partner is 5’11” and found it comfortable)
