Volkswagen T5 Transporter 2.5L Diesel
This converted T5 camper van has a full service history and is mechanically sound. It is MOTd until 12th September 2026 and has always been completely reliable. We’ve done a few family holidays in it, but the milage is still quite reasonable for the age of the van. We are selling it now as we don’t use it much, as our children are grown up and it needs a bit of work that we do not have the time to do.
On the plus side – it is a powerful 2.5L Diesel engine, it has air-conditioning (which has been crucial for our French holidays in the summer), it has a tow bar, and mechanically it has never let us down.
We’ve had it serviced regularly, mostly by a respected local garage and have the service history. It has 6 forward gears, so that top one is pretty handy on a long drive.
The conversion was done before we bought the van, maybe around 15 years ago. We had reversing sensors fitted. We also added the base swivel unit for the front double seat. It’s a bit of a hassle to swivel it, but if you’re camped up for a couple of days it’s well worth it.
It has a gas hob, a built in water tank and sink, also a fridge and LED lights (but see the downside below). It has a lovely table that fits onto a rail internally or that can be removed and stood up outside of the van.
It also has a tailgate opening at the back, which I really wanted as it is good cover if you have to pitch up in the rain.
There are plenty of cupboards to store things, plus space under the twin seat at the front and the rock and roll bed.
It has a double bed up in the pop up roof space too. When my kids were little we even had the smallest one sleep across the front seats on an inflatable mattress, so we used to manage 5 of us in there.
On the down side – it’s got a few dents and scrapes. It still looks nice overall, but we live on a narrow road and it’s had a few ‘hit and run’ drive-bys in it’s time. One side is worse than the other, but it’s got some dents. The body work is sound, but not as beautiful as it once was.
It has two bigger issues as a camper conversion, hence the low price… 1. The plug in electrics do not work. I took it to a specialist over a year ago and he said it could be that the leisure battery needs replacing, but when he saw the trip switch in the boot, he suggested that the whole power thing was quite old and ‘not something that he’d fit nowadays’. We’ve camped in it recently and just plug straight into the mains and use an extension wire in the van – but that is not ideal, in that the LED lights and pump to the tap and fridge don’t work. We use a separate cool box now. I’ve no idea how involved this job is, but it’s proved too much hassle for me given that we don’t use it much.
2. The side windows could do with replacing. The runners on the one over the sink need replacing and the one in the door has leaked when it’s been very heavy rain in the winter. I’ve had a quote to get newer T5 ones retro fitted, it seems an upgrade is quite easy to do with a newer modern one that doesn’t have this design flaw, but again, I’ve reflected that in the price.
Apart from that is a decent conversion, but showing some signs or wear as it’s at least 15 years old I estimate, the pop up canvas is perfectly fine, but it could do with replacing before too long as I’ve caught it in the roof mechanism a couple of times and taped that up.
So there is the whole picture. If it were in super good condition, I estimate it is worth over £16k, but I’ve tried to be honest here and price in the jobs that need doing.
In the main description – this work was originally done by south west campers in Devon
rock and roll double bed and pop up bed in the roof space, we used to have our daughter sleep across the front seats too on an inflatable when she was small, so you can sleep 4 comfortably and 4 + a child at a push
