We have vans right across the country, so if you’re after a campervan to hire in Auckland, Christchurch, Nelson, Hamilton, Queenstown, Wellington or Dunedin then there’s a quirky option waiting for you.
Every van has been built by hand and looked after by an owner who truly cares about their camper. Think handcrafted cabinetry, full-sized beds, log burners and kitchens you can actually cook in. We turn away more vans than we take on, so the hardest part for customers is narrowing it down to just one.
The New Zealand story
Quirky Campers New Zealand was born from a love of adventure, craftsmanship, and the freedom of the open road. Originally set up by Leanne and Dan, who brought Quirky Campers across the globe from the UK, the New Zealand branch quickly became a hub for handcrafted, one-of-a-kind campervans for hire.
In 2024, the Quirky Campers NZ mantle was passed on to Simon, an avid traveller, (pretty average) surfer, and artist who has long enjoyed escaping in a camper for adventurous roadies and surf epics. For Simon, campervanning offers spontaneity, off-grid adventures, and chasing the promise of perfect waves up and down New Zealand’s incredible coastline, often accompanied by his loyal four-legged co-pilot, Kora.
James joined in 2025 and now looks after most of the day to day, so he’s the one you’ll hear from when you enquire about a van or join us as an owner. Years of travelling around New Zealand and further afield brought him here, having seen first hand what trips like these can mean to people. He is the proud owner of camper-bus, Milford.
Between Simon and James they’re carrying on what made Quirky work in the first place. Slow travel rather than ticking off sights. Small businesses rather than big fleets. And somewhere for people who’ve spent months, or years, building something remarkable to hand the keys to someone else who’ll appreciate their efforts and ideas.

Our campervan owners are the heart and soul of our business. It’s thanks to their dedication and creativity that our wonderful campervans exist, let alone form part of our delightfully quirky collection.
Our growing community of owners are spread across New Zealand. What they all share is a passion for handcrafted campers, a love of adventure and a desire to share their pride and joy with the world when it’s not in use. How Quirky Campers started
Quirky Campers started in the UK in 2010 as a family business run by husband and wife team David and Lindsay. They set it up as a means to rent their own campervan, Bella, while they lived in Kenya for six months. Running the rentals remotely, they were amazed at how much interest Bella received.
On their return they slowly started to build the business, and after many years of running Quirky as a duo, they expanded the team in the UK and Quirky Campers NZ shortly followed.
David and Lindsay believe passionately in supporting craftsmanship and a balanced family life, two things Quirky Campers has helped them achieve for themselves, the Quirky team and our owners over the years.
