Hirta is a 2004 Mercedes MB140D with a 2.9 litre five cylinder diesel engine and a manual gearbox. Two seats up front, both with three point belts, and a driving position that feels more van than truck, so she’s an easy step up if you’ve only ever driven a car. Fuel economy is decent for her size at roughly 4.5 litres per 100km, which makes a full loop of the South Island kinder on the wallet than you might expect. Being diesel, Road User Charges apply at $0.08 per km, billed after your trip based on the odometer. We’ve kept her well serviced regularly and the water pump was replaced recently, so she’s in good mechanical order and ready for the long hauls.
In The Cab: 2 seats in cab up front. There is also a CD player and a separate, portable Bluetooth speaker available for tunes.
Kitchen Area: Enjoy cooking on a spacious timber countertop, complete with a charming bowl sink with hand pump tap, and easy access to a 21L Dometic chilly bin. For cooking, use a foldable camp stool to comfortably cook on a portable cook stove at the countertop inside, with the electric fan located just above. The Lagun dining table swivels over to provide extra countertop space so you can really cook up a feast. If you’d rather be outdoors, create your own outdoor kitchen setup on a spacious camp table. The owners have also been known to use the wood burner’s top to heat up a Mocka pot of coffee in the morning, or even to whip up a cosy breakfast hash. You’ll have access to all the necessities you need, including a 2kg gas bottle and the essential utensils, pots, pans, knives, crockery and cutlery, spices, oil, etc.
Dining/Living/Sleeping Area: Hirta has an internal height of 1.5m, so while not standing room, she offers a very comfortable amount of headspace for dining, cooking, and lounging comfortably in bed – people are always commenting how spacious she feels. The U-shaped dining area easily fits 4-6 around the dining table, in case you want to invite some of your camp friends in for a dram by the fire before you head to sleep. The Lagun table swivels for the most convenient setup, and all the windows slide open–a feature you really have to use to fully appreciate! She also comes equipped with a luxuriously thick, memory foam mattress (137cm x 176cm), which is a touch shorter than a standard double bed, but as the bed runs lengthways you can your feet over the end! She’s fully insulated and comes with thermal curtains and tinted windows for extra privacy. There’s generous storage that’s accessible both inside and outside the cab. A cabinet next to the bed is the perfect place for packing away your clothes for the trip, so you don’t have to go outside of the van to get clothes or pyjamas from a suitcase before settling in for the night.
Water Facilities: Hirta is certified self-contained. There are removable 25 litre fresh and grey water tanks as well as a toilet.
Electrical/Lighting and Audio Equipment: Hirta has a leisure battery charged via the engine when driving, LED lights and an inverter with USB sockets for charging devices. She also has a solar panel to keep her powered for longer trips, and an electric fan
Hirta is our second campervan, and we’ve had our first for many years. We love the ease of travelling around the country in a campervan, feeling like we have our little home on wheels.
