The North Island is Aotearoa’s most diverse destination. Geothermal wonders, Māori cultural sites, stunning beaches, world-class surfing, ski fields, wine regions, and dramatic volcanic landscapes are all easily accessible from your Quirky campervan.
Auckland, with its international airport, is New Zealand’s biggest city and the main arrival point for many international travellers. Contrasting west coast and east coast beaches, the islands of the Hauraki Gulf and its vibrant downtown harbour make it a classic destination in its own right.
Leave the city, and you are just a few hours away from many breathtaking regions that are perfect for exploring by campervan.
Head north through the rolling hill country of the “winterless North”, a subtropical wonderland renowned for its kauri forests and rich Māori history. Swing over to the east and you’ll discover the Coromandel, a beach-lover’s paradise filled with stunningly scenic coastal walks and pristine beaches.
The central North Island via Hamilton is packed with natural wonders and historical sites. Visit the iconic movie set of Hobbiton, marvel at the breathtaking volcanoes of Tongariro, cruise the rugged Taranaki coast and soak in the natural geothermal pools of Rotorua.
Last but certainly not least, the stunning southern part of the North Island is home to Wellington. Known for its funky vibe, Wellington is packed with quirky restaurants, bars, and museums, and surrounded by dramatic coastal landscapes that make for epic roadie-ing. Northland Loop
Leave from Auckland (or Hamilton!) → Drive north to Whangarei → Bay of Islands → Cape Reinga → back down the northwest coast to Auckland.
This is the classic Northland coastal run. It offers dramatic headlands, historic colonial towns, Māori sites, and the drive to New Zealand’s northern tip.
The Bay of Islands offers a slow 1–2 days exploring by water and on foot; Cape Reinga is a spiritual destination. Allow time for white-sand beach stops and to take in the scenery.
12 to 14 days
Thermal Coast & Taranaki
Leave from Auckland or Hamilton. Drive to Taranaki (3 to 4 nights) → Lake Taupo (2 to 3 nights) → Rotorua (3 to 4 nights) → back to your base.
Taranaki is one of NZs most symmetrical and dramatic mountains, set against the Tasman Sea and black-sand beaches. Explore the coastal towns of New Plymouth and Stratford, then head inland to Rotorua’s geysers and thermal pools.
Take a slower pace, more time to soak in thermal pools, tackle walks, visit Māori cultural sites around Rotorua, and explore Taupo’s lake and surrounding geothermal area.

Head north up the west coast and on to Cape Reinga → then down the east coast via Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, and on to Gisborne → Hawke’s Bay → Wairarapa → Wellington → Taranaki → Taupo and Rotorua → Waikato → Auckland.
Adjust according to a base in Auckland, Hamilton or Wellington.

Good to know before you go
One-way hire options starting on the North Island
Because every Quirky van is privately owned, one-way hires need to cover the cost of getting the van home. We also need to check in with our owners to make sure they can accommodate collecting the vehicle.
For our vans on the North Island, indicative one-way fees are as follows:
- Auckland to Queenstown around $2,000
- Auckland to Christchurch around $1,800
- Auckland to Nelson around $1,450
- Auckland to Wellington around $850.
- Hamilton and Wellinton based vans – please talk to us about pricing to get to the South Island
For longer trips, some travellers prefer a North Island loop, then a flight south to pick up a second van for a South Island loop. It’s often no more expensive than the one-way fee, and you get two different campervans out of the trip.

Freedom camping on the North Island
While Quirky’s campers are certified for freedom camping, be warned: NZ’s freedom camping rules are complex! They vary by region, change frequently, and rangers do enforce them. Fines run to several hundred dollars, so please be kind to your pocket and read up before you park up ;).
During NZ’s peak summer months, it can be difficult to find available freedom camping-approved sites in many of the North Island’s popular spots. Do plan ahead for the destinations you have in mind.
Our recommendation is to have a paid campsite in reserve. We also recommend using the Rankers or CamperMate apps, which are great for planning ahead, but be aware they are not the final word. Additional details will be available on each area’s local authority website.

Where do I collect my campervan?
At the campervan owner’s home. North Island collection points vary by vehicle. The listing shows the approximate location before booking, and the exact address is confirmed before your trip.
Can I collect a campervan directly from an Airport?
Possibly, but it would be subject to owner approval and an additional fee. Quirky Campers has no airport depot as each campervan is privately owned. An Uber, taxi or public transport connection is normally the simplest and cheapest option to get to your owner to collect the van.
What is included with campervan hire?
Every booking includes comprehensive insurance, 24/7 AA roadside assistance and unlimited kilometres. Each camper also comes with all the cookware you need, plus bedding and towels at no additional cost.
Can I stay off grid in a Quirky campervan?
Yes, unless expressly stated, Quirky Campers NZ vans are set up for off-grid travel. Many of our North Island vans include solar panels, leisure batteries, and inverters that keep your lights, fridge, water pump and phones running without needing a powered campsite. The exact off-grid duration depends on the specific van’s setup (battery capacity, solar size, fridge load, and the time of year), and is detailed on each individual van profile.
What happens if my flight is delayed or I’m late for my pick-up?
We understand international travel doesn’t always go to plan. If your flight is delayed, please contact your van owner directly as soon as possible (their phone number will be on your booking confirmation). Quirky NZ owners are generally flexible and will do their best to accommodate a later collection, including evening pick-ups where reasonable. If a same-day handover isn’t possible, we’ll work with you and the owner to arrange collection the following morning. Get in touch if you’d like to discuss specific arrangements.
