This guide walks you through how hiring with us works, from finding the right van to picking it up, packing it up and heading off. No scary lingo, no hidden surprises, just the good stuff.

Finding Your Perfect Campervan

Start by heading to the Hire a Campervan page on the Quirky Campers website. There, you’ll find our full fleet of beautiful, individually converted campervans available to hire across the UK.

You can narrow things down using handy filters, including travel dates, location, number of belted seats, number of berths, pet-friendly vans, festival-friendly vans, EU travel, toilets and showers, automatic vans and family-friendly features.

So whether you need a compact camper for two, a pet-friendly van for your four-legged co-pilot, or a roomy family camper with all the bells, whistles and bunk beds, you can find something that fits your trip beautifully.

Each campervan has its own listing with everything you need to know before booking, including photos, availability, pricing, features, insurance information, house rules and optional extras.

Understanding the Campervan Listings

Every Quirky Camper is different, which is exactly the point. They’re privately owned, individually designed and full of personality.

On each campervan page, you’ll find all the practical bits alongside the dreamy details.

Photos

This is where the campervan swooning begins.

Each listing includes photos of the interior, exterior and key features, so you can get a proper feel for the space before you book. From handmade kitchens to cosy beds, clever storage and twinkly lighting, this is your chance to start planning your first coffee with a view.

Seats and Berths

Seats tell you how many people can safely travel in the van using belted seats.

Berths tell you how many people can sleep in the van.

So, for example, a campervan with two adult berths and two child berths has sleeping space for two adults and two children. You’ll need one belted seat for every person travelling in the vehicle.

Essential Information

This section gives you a quick overview of the van’s key features and house rules, such as whether it’s pet-friendly, festival-friendly, has a toilet or shower, or is suitable for EU travel.

Vehicle Spec

This is the technical bit. You’ll find information such as the van’s make, model, size and transmission type, handy if you’re looking for something automatic, compact or easy to manoeuvre.

Insurance and Driver Information

Each campervan has its own insurance criteria, so always check the individual listing before booking.

Most campervans include insurance and breakdown cover as standard, and many allow up to three drivers at no extra cost, as long as all drivers meet the required criteria.

After booking, every driver will need to complete a driver form and provide the correct documents before the trip.

About the Campervan

This is where you’ll find more detail about the van’s layout, kitchen, sleeping arrangements, off-grid capabilities, storage, heating, special features and conversion story.

Some vans are simple and rustic. Some are luxurious and fully kitted out. Some are made for muddy boots, salty dogs and sandy children. Some are all about slow mornings, soft bedding and coffee with a view.

That’s the joy of Quirky Campers. No two vans are the same.

Location

Our campervans are based all over the UK. You can use the map view to find a van near you, or near where you’d like your adventure to begin.

The exact pick-up location will be shared once your booking is confirmed.

Pick-up and Drop-off Times

Bookings are usually based on a 24-hour period, with the standard pick-up and drop-off time set at 2pm.

Some owners may offer earlier pick-up or later drop-off for an additional charge, depending on availability. These can usually be added during the booking process or agreed with the owner once your booking is confirmed.

How to Book Your Campervan

Once you’ve found the one that makes your heart do a tiny road trip dance, booking is simple.

Choose your preferred dates on the campervan’s calendar. Any greyed-out dates are unavailable or already booked.

Then choose any optional extras you’d like to add. These vary by van but might include bedding, towels, bike racks, camping furniture, cleaning, awnings or pet-friendly extras.

Once you’ve added your dates and extras, you’ll see the full booking price. This includes the essentials you need to get going, such as insurance and breakdown cover.

Then pop in your details and click Book Now.

Some campervans are available for instant booking, which means you can confirm your reservation straight away, as long as your trip is more than four days away. Other booking requests are sent to the campervan owner first, who will confirm whether they can accommodate your trip.

Last-minute bookings will usually need owner approval before they can be confirmed.

What’s Included in the Price?

Your booking price includes the essentials you need to pick up your campervan and hit the road, including insurance and breakdown cover.

Most campervans also include kitchen equipment and cooking gas where applicable, but exact inclusions vary from van to van, so it’s always worth checking the individual listing.

Optional extras may be available for an additional cost. These could include bedding, towels, cleaning, bike racks, BBQs, camping chairs, awnings or other useful bits and bobs for your trip.

Payment and Security Deposit

To confirm your booking, you’ll pay a non-refundable deposit of 20% of the total booking cost.

The remaining balance is due 30 days before your trip begins.

A £500 security deposit will be placed as a hold on your card two days before your booking starts. This is released up to seven days after your booking ends, provided the campervan is returned safely and in the same condition.

Insurance, Breakdown Cover and Excess

All Quirky Campers bookings include insurance and breakdown cover as standard.

The insurance excess is usually £1,500, although this can vary depending on the campervan, insurer and driver details. This is the maximum amount you may be liable for if there is damage to the vehicle or an insurance claim is made.

We recommend reading the booking conditions before your trip and considering excess reimbursement cover and travel insurance for extra peace of mind.

Paperwork Before You Travel

We know. Paperwork is not the fun bit.

But once it’s done, you’re one step closer to loading up the van, choosing the playlist and arguing gently over who packed the good snacks.

After your booking is confirmed, you’ll receive an email with the details of your campervan and a second email explaining the documents needed before your trip.

Each driver will need to complete a driver form and provide the required documents. This usually includes:

  • a valid driving licence
  • two proofs of address dated within the last 90 days
  • a passport or proof of ID for non-UK drivers
  • a licence check code for UK drivers

All named drivers must also be present when collecting the campervan.

To find out what is a qualifying proof of address document please visit our FAQs.

If you’re unsure about the requirements, just get in touch as early as possible so we can help get everything sorted before your adventure begins.

Planning Your Trip

Once your campervan is booked, the fun really begins.

Will it be the wilds of Scotland? The winding roads of Snowdonia? A lazy loop around Cornwall? A Lake District escape with misty mornings and pub lunches? Or a close-to-home weekend that still feels like a proper adventure?|

Most Quirky Campers can travel anywhere within the UK, but always check the individual listing for any specifics.

Taking a Campervan to Europe

Planning to take your campervan to Europe? Make sure you choose an EU-friendly campervan when searching.

If the van allows EU travel, you’ll need to add the required European travel kit and Vehicle on Hire certificate during booking. Once booked, let the campervan owner know where you’re planning to go, so the correct breakdown cover and insurance can be arranged.

Our Fuel Shortage Guarantee

We know uncertainty around fuel supply can make it harder to commit to a trip. And really, booking a campervan holiday should feel exciting, not stressful.

That’s why we’ve introduced our Fuel Shortage Guarantee, giving you extra peace of mind if unexpected fuel disruption affects your plans.

If a qualifying UK-wide fuel shortage event prevents your trip from going ahead, we’ll provide a 100% refund for your booking.

The guarantee applies to both existing and future bookings, as long as your trip has not yet started and the policy conditions are met.

You may qualify for a full refund if official government announcements or travel advisories prevent travel, or if there are widespread fuel supply issues across the UK and Quirky Campers determines that the disruption is significant enough to activate the policy.

To qualify, your cancellation request must be made in writing to Quirky Campers no earlier than 7 days before your booking start date. The qualifying fuel shortage event must relate to the UK only.

Eligibility is determined at Quirky Campers’ discretion, but as always, we’ll treat every case fairly, with integrity and compassion.

If your booking qualifies under this policy, you’ll receive a full refund from Quirky Campers for your booking.

Picking Up Your Campervan

The bags are packed. The snacks are ready. Someone has definitely packed three jumpers, two extra mugs and a book they absolutely will not read.

When collection day arrives, you’ll pick up your campervan directly from the owner at the agreed time and location. The owner will give you a handover, show you how everything works and walk you through the van’s features.

They’ll also go through the inventory and note any existing marks or damage before you set off.

Make sure you bring your driving licence with you, and remember that all named drivers need to be present at pick-up.

Then it’s time to load up, settle in and roll away in your new home on wheels.

While You’re Away

Hopefully, your trip is full of blue skies, excellent snacks and views that make everyone go quiet for a moment.

But if anything does go wrong, don’t panic.

You’ll have the campervan owner’s contact details, and they should be your first port of call if you have any issues with the van. All campervans include breakdown cover, so if something can’t be fixed over the phone, you’ll have the information you need to get help.

If the campervan cannot continue the trip, the breakdown provider should arrange recovery back to the starting point. You can also contact Quirky Campers, and we’ll do our best to help find a suitable alternative so your adventure can continue where possible.

Returning Your Campervan

When your trip comes to an end, sad but true, return the campervan at the agreed drop-off time.

If you’re going to be early or late, let the owner know as soon as possible. Late returns may result in an additional charge, especially if another booking is due to begin after yours.

Before handing back the keys, check the campervan over with the owner and note its return condition. Taking photos or videos can be helpful too.

You’ll usually need to return the campervan with a full tank of fuel, just as you received it. If you’re unable to fill up nearby, the owner may refill it and charge you for the fuel and their time.

You should also return the campervan in the same clean and tidy condition it was collected in, unless you’ve added cleaning as an optional extra.

Returning Your Campervan

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. When it’s time to return your campervan be sure to try and return it at the drop-off time arranged, if you’re going to be early or late, let the campervan owner know ahead of time. Once you have returned the campervan be sure to mark its state on return, taking photos and videos if you can. Leave the keys with your campervan owner and be sure to let them know how your trip went.

After Your Trip

Once you’re home, unpacked and already wondering when you can go again, we’d love to hear how it went.

You’ll receive a review link after your booking, where you can share feedback on both the campervan and Quirky Campers. The good, the useful, the glowing, the “we saw dolphins from the van window” kind of feedback, we want to hear it all.

And if you took photos, please share them with us. Nothing makes us happier than seeing our campervans out in the wild, doing what they were lovingly built to do.

FAQs

Is campervan hire suitable for first-timers?

Absolutely. Lots of our hirers are brand new to campervan travel. The owner will show you how everything works at handover, and each campervan listing explains what’s included, how the layout works and what to expect.

Do I need to stay on campsites?

Not always. Campsites are a great option if you want facilities, electric hook-up or a guaranteed place to stay, but many of our campervans are also well suited to more off-grid adventures. Always travel responsibly and check local rules before parking up for the night.

What should I look for when choosing a campervan?

Start with the practical bits: how many people are travelling, where you want to pick up from, whether you need a pet-friendly van, and whether you’d like features such as a toilet, shower, heating, off-grid power or automatic transmission. Then follow your heart a little. The right van should feel like part of the adventure.

Will the owner show me how everything works?

Yes. When you collect the campervan, the owner will give you a handover and show you how the key features work. This might include the bed, heating, cooker, water, electrics, storage and any wonderfully clever quirks the van has tucked away.

Can I see the camper before booking?

Quirky Campers doesn’t have a central base or forecourt, as all of our campervans are privately owned and based across the UK.

That said, if you’d like to view a campervan before booking, just get in touch with us. We can check with the owner to see whether a viewing is possible.

Many of our owners are happy to arrange a look around in advance, but this is always at their discretion and depends on their availability.
