Hiring a Campervan

  • How much does it cost?

Prices vary depending on which campervan you book, the booking length, season, and day of the week. Click the ‘BOOK NOW’ button to get an instant quote for your preferred dates and campervan. Seasons are split into four categories; Low, Low-mid, Mid and High. The season calendar defines which dates fall into which season.

We occasionally have special offers, which are available to those on our mailing list and our facebook page.

  • What is included in the price?

The booking price includes everything you need to pick up and drive off your campervan, except bedding which can be purchased as an optional extra.

Insurance, breakdown cover, kitchen equipment, and cooking gas (if applicable) are all included in the booking price. See the individual campervan pages for exact details of what else is included. There are also ‘optional add ons’ that can be purchased such as bedding, bike racks, awnings, snow chains and BBQs, which vary van to van.

  • What is not included in the price?

Bedding, cleaning, any other ‘extras’ (see below).

  • What are the extras?

These are campervan specific – availability and costs will vary.
Examples are: bedding, satnav, bike rack, breakfast hamper, camping furniture, cleaning. If there is anything else that you need please just ask and we will see what we can do.

  • Is insurance included?

YES! All our campervans come with specialist comprehensive campervan hirer’s insurance. This will usually cover up to 3 drivers aged between 23 and 75 at no extra cost, unless stated otherwise on the campervan’s web page. The excess (maximum you pay in the event of damage) varies depending on the vehicle and the drivers and can be between £1000 and £2000 (most hires are £1000 – see below for details).

UK and EU residents can opt to take out an excess reimbursement policy here through our recommended third party provider enabling you to claim the excess back in the event of an accident minus £100.

We do recommend you also take out your own travel insurance for that extra peace of mind.

  • Who does the insurance cover?

Unless otherwise stated on the campervan’s web page, the insurance covers drivers which meet the following criteria:

Age: between 23 and 75 years
Nationality: UK or EU driver’s licenses
    Length held: Minimum 2 years
Points: No more than 2 convictions in total and no convictions of more than 3 points
Claims: No more than 1 claim in the past 3 years
Proofs of Address: Be able to show 2 x proofs of address, dated within the last 90 days, which match the address on their driving licence.

NOTE: This criteria is flexible, but the campervan owner will need to refer the driver’s details to the insurer and may require some additional information.

Excess: There is an excess of between £1000 and £2000 in the event of any damage to the vehicle. This amount is set by the insurer and is dependent on driver age, convictions, claims and country of issue (for a UK driver with a clean license it will be £1000).

International Drivers from most countries can be covered but the excess is likely to be higher than £1000. Non-UK drivers must be able to present a passport or ID card.

Breakdown cover is also included – details will be in the Campervan.

Drivers: Most of our campervans offer the first 3 drivers for free – additional drivers can be added at an extra cost. All named drivers must be present to collect the campervan as they will all need to sign the agreement and present their documents.

The full driver form will ask for all the relevant details but feel free to drop us an email if you have any questions.

  • What documents do I need to bring when I collect?

    Each Driver needs the following:

  • Is there a security deposit?

Each booking is subject to a security deposit of £500.00. Two days prior to the booking start date a hold will be placed on your nominated card for this amount. This will be released 1 week after the the booking end date, providing the vehicle is returned safely and in the same condition as it was at the start of the booking.

  • What if I crash or damage something?

The driver will be liable for the insurance excess in the event of any damage to the vehicle. Anything beyond that is covered by the insurance where a claim can be made. The driver is responsible for getting the contact details of any third parties involved.

Obviously we hope you will take care of these beautiful campervans. Minor damage is likely to be overlooked but please do let us know! Campervan owners reserve the right to charge you for damage to the interior or exterior, fixtures and fittings.

The insurance excess varies from £1000 to £2000 dependent on the insurer used and the drivers being insured. The excess amount will be confirmed once final payment has been received and the driver form filled out. The driver will be liable for part or all of the value of the excess in the event of the vehicle being damaged and/or a claim being made.

In the event that no driver was operating the vehicle when the damage occurred the first driver will be named as responsible for the vehicle at that time.

  • Is breakdown cover included?

Yes. All the campervans have breakdown cover including roadside assistance and recovery. If recovery is required you will be returned with the vehicle to the normal pick-up location for that vehicle.

  • Can I take it to a festival?

Please check our festival friendly filter to see all the campervans available for festivals. You will need to bring the campervan back in a reasonable condition. A cleaning service is available (see cleaning below) but this does not cover any damage caused during your stay.

  • Can I take it to Europe?

That depends. Most vehicles can be taken outside the UK others can’t. Please use the EU friendly filter to view the full range of those with international travel allowed. For those that are; breakdown and insurance for European travel are included in the standard booking cost. Please note EU travel includes Republic of Ireland and the EU27, for other countries please get in touch before you book and provide us with the dates, vehicle and countries to be visited. You must purchase a VOH (vehicle on hire) and Europe kit as an extra when you book with Quirky Campers. The owner of the vehicle you are hiring will then purchase this on your behalf.

  • Is there an additional charge for EU travel?

You must select a VOH certificate (vehicle on hire) and European travel kit for travelling outside the UK, these cost £30 and can be ordered as an extra when you book your Quirky Camper. The owner of the vehicle you are hiring will then purchase the certificate from RAC and provide a European kit. There is also a mileage limit on most bookings.

  • How many people can travel?

Belted seats range from 2 to 6 depending on the campervan. see ‘The Vehicle’ section on the individual campervan’s web page for a description of the seating arrangement for traveling.

  • How long can I have the van?

At a minimum, all our vans have a 3 night minimum booking in low and mid season, with some increasing this to 5 nights in high season. On the other end of the spectrum, we get quite a few 1-3 month bookings and have even had 6 and 9 month bookings. So whatever type of travel you’re into, we have a van to suit your length of time.

  • Can you deliver the van to me?

Delivery can sometimes be arranged depending on the owners availability. However, this is often very costly once you factor in fuel, time, and return travel for the owner.

  • Can I fit a child seat?

Most of the campervans have passenger seats suitable for child car seats or boosters, some also come with isofix. Most owners can also provide car seats as an extra if you are travelling from overseas or coming by public transport. Please check the individual campervan web pages.

  • Do you have beds suitable for babies/children?

We have a wide assortment of bed arrangements from double bunks, to children’s hammocks to hanging cribs. Many of our campervans also have floor space for travel cots – see individual van specifications for more details in particular the ‘usage’ section.

  • Do you have a hook up?

Many of our campervans have electric hook-up – please check individual campervan web pages. A hook up means there is a 240v sockets available in the vehicle and a lead to plug in to campsite electrical point. The socket can be used to power mains voltage appliances such as laptop charge or hairdryer.

  • Do I need to bring bedding?

Yes, unless you decide to purchase it as an extra. Please check the individual campervan web pages for options and prices.

  • Can I bring my dog/cat/lizard?

Many of our campers are pet-friendly but be sure to check the campervan’s web page before you book – you can use the filters . Where pets are accepted it is always as long as they don’t go on the seats or bed and if the campervan is brought back covered in dog hair you will be charged for cleaning (see cleaning).

  • Is there a toilet or shower?

Please check the individual campervan web pages – some come with built in shower/toilet cubicles and others can have portapotties or outdoor showers included or to be added as an extra.

  • Is there a mileage limit?

Yes there is: 160 miles per day.

    • Standard bookings:
      • 160 miles per day – daily mileage allowance of 160 miles per full day of a paid booking.
      • 20 pence per mile – additional charge per mile in excess of the total allowance for the booked period.
    • Special Discounted Bookings: Lower mileage limits may be advertised for special offer bookings.

We expect 160 miles per day to cover the vast majority of customers with no additional charges.

Please bear in mind the age, size and cruising speed of the vehicle when planning your journey. Some older and/or larger vehicles travel much more slowly than what you might be used to.

  • Is there a fuel charge?

No. You pick up the campervan with a full tank and bring it back the same way. If for any reason you were not able to use a nearby fuel station, the owners will fill it up for you and you will be charged for the actual fuel price (not £2.50/litre like some companies!) and a small charge for their time. Do please let us know if this has happened so we don’t inadvertently give it to the next customer with a partially empty fuel tank.

  • Are any of the vans automatic?

Yes, please see all the automatic campervans we have available to hire here.

  • What happens if I return late?

Firstly, please let the owners know ASAP as there might be someone waiting to collect it. In this instance we would offer them a pro rata refund for any delay. Owners reserve the right to charge you for late returns at up to £20 per hour but would always try to avoid this. We can sometimes accommodate later returns if there is no immediate subsequent booking, but wouldn’t be able to confirm that until a couple of days before your return.

  • Children?

Kids love campervans and our campervans love kids! Do check the individual campervan web pages for info about seats, beds and anything else which might affect how child-friendly they are. While you’re at it, check out our blog on campervanning with kids – we’ve done lots of campervan trips with children.

  • Do I need to clean the campervan?

Quirky Campers don’t do fines, however we do offer services. If you don’t want to have to clean the van on return, most campervans have an optional cleaning charge. If you don’t want to pay, then you simply need to bring the campervan back clean and free from rubbish in the condition it was when you picked it up.

  • What should I pack?

Our campers all have plenty of storage space so feel free to pack your slippers/top hat/snorkeling equipment (kitchen sink is provided). We include most of the basics and a few little extras. Each van has a detailed list of what it includes as standard so have a peek at those.

  • Do I need to stay in a campsite?
  • Is there a minimum booking period?

Yes, generally the minimum booking period is 3 nights, but this can vary by campervan.

If you’re looking to travel within the next 14 days, you are able to book for a shorter period. Please be aware shorter booking requests must be approved by the campervan’s owner before they are confirmed.

  • Why do the dates I want not work?

There a several reasons why dates you are requesting might not be allowed.

    • The dates are already booked (this will be shown on the availability calendar).
    • Your enquiry is too short. Generally the minimum  booking period is 3 nights, but this can vary by campervan and for particular periods.
    • The pick-up or drop-off day is not allowed. Most campervan owners allow bookings to start and end every day of the week, however some owners cannot do certain dates. Please see each individual campervan web page for details.

Where you enquire about dates that don’t fit within the rules for that particular vehicle the booking system will offer you the next nearest option that does work. If that is not suitable just go back and try an enquiry that is or get in touch for help.
