As hard as it is for me to do, it’s time to sell my beloved campervan, Hugh. Five months ago I moved here from America and purchased this van to live in full time. To be more specific, Hugh is an ex-ambulance that’s been converted into what’s basically a little cabin on wheels. I had been looking on Quirky Campers for months, trying to find the right van, and Hugh easily became my first choice. I’ve spent to past four months traveling around Scotland and couldn’t have chosen a better van to do so. Hugh has made van life easy, as he’s unmatchably cozy, as well as equipped with a wood-burning furnace, a 70L water tank hooked up to a sink, a fridge, full electrics, plenty of livable room, and more storage than I know what to do with. I’ve enjoyed my time in Hugh immensely, but unfortunately that time must come to an end, as I want to downgrade to a smaller vehicle before making my way into mainland Europe. So, if you’re looking for a cozy, homey van with all the amenities, and don’t mind driving a bigger older vehicle, Hugh just might be your perfect match.
The part about Hugh that understandably causes some people a bit of hesitation, as it did me as well, is the fact that he’s old and has a high milage count. Since he’s an ambulance, he was built to last, his diesel engine still works beautifully and I haven’t had a single engine problem in my five months driving him. He passed his MOT in May and since buying him I’ve also had the breaks replaces.
Finally I’ll mention that Hugh is a product of the one and only Van Rambo Project based in Bristol. It’s a conversion company lead by a highly talented woman named Sami who specializes in converting old ambulances due to their reliability and livable space. Hugh (or Rambo as Sami named him) is featured on her instagram and is probably the most cabin, woody themed of her conversions. Sami’s first conversion was an ambulance exactly the same make and year as Hugh, except it had well over 300,000 miles on it. She was able to travel Europe with no engine problems. They’re built to last!
Since I’m trying to sell quickly, I’m open to offers!

It’s a conversion company lead by an extremely talented woman named Sami who specializes in converting old ambulances due to their reliability and livable space. Hugh (or Rambo as Sami named him) is featured on her instagram and is the most cabin-style, woody of her conversions. He is a unique, ‘quirky’ camper with a reliable, durable engine and plenty of living and storage space. The van has a roof rack, a solar panel, a fridge, a sink, an electric water pump, a bed that converts into two sofas with a dining table, a wardrobe, a furnace, window coverings, and more.
This van was originally sold for 18,000 post conversion, then I bought it for 17,000. While I’ve spent about 1,000 replacing the brakes and on other minor improvements, I’m listing it at such a low price in order to sell it quickly and because the leisure battery could do with replacing. It still works and it still charges, it simply isn’t strong enough to power the fridge for more than about 24 hours without sun or driving. This is an easy fix of about 100quid, but I simply haven’t needed to do it. There are also a couple bits and bops that need touching up and Sami has been kind enough to offer help with some. These things include new tail lights, a minor leak, a bit of touching up the paint–all of which would cost about 25quid and not take long. I’m happy to get these things done before the buy, or sell it as it is and take 200quid off the overall price for the buyer. Please contact me for any further questions or to schedule a viewing. Thanks!

Quirky loves this style means that Quirky Campers would potentially approve this vehicle for hiring. However, Quirky have not approved a Gas Safe certificate, a Weighbridge certificate, or the vehicle's electrics. Buyers must check these themselves. For some tips on what to look out for read this. If the listing has no Gas Safe certificate, no unladen weight and no electrical sign-off please proceed with caution!
