Beautiful Ford Transit Fully Off Grid Conversion

The conversion is built on a base of PIR board and recycled plastic bottle insulation with a vapour barrier in between the insulation and the walls, which are plywood.
It has a single fixed bed at the rear which extends to a large double on a slide out mechanism and sleeps two width ways, with two cut outs into the insulated walls to allow for a longer bed extension. A maxx airfan sits above to bed to act as a fan blowing air directly onto the bed in hot summer months, and an extractor fan when cooking to avoid damp and smell build up. The L shaped sofa/bench seat is home to large cushions which are used to extend the bed to make a double when it is extended. The table is a permanent feature which can be extended to fill the entire L shaped bench with multiple people dining (seats up to x4 ppl). Underneath the bed is a 120L fresh water tank, filter, accumulator, and pump, which provide water to the large kitchen sink. The sink has an extendable tap which can be used as an outdoor shower next to the van. The kitchen is also home to a 2 burner gas hob, as well as a fridge-freezer and ample storage in the form of two draws and a very large corner cupboard. The sink drains to a smaller 25L grey water tank underneath the sink which is easily drained and cleaned on a regular basis, sitting next to a slide out full sized bin. The kitchen counters are solid oak, and the entire kitchen is surrounded by a hand-made clay tile backsplash.

Underneath the bed you can also find the electrical system, which is comprised of the following:
– 300ah Lithium leisure battery with bluetooth connection from Fogstar Drift
– 600W of solar from x2 300W solar panels (fixed to the roof)
– A solar switch
– 60A mppt solar charger from Renogy
– Smart 7-stage battery charger for shore power
– Lynx Distributer common negative and positive busbar from Victron
– Smart shunt from Victron to monitor battery health and usage
– 1000W inverter connected to x4 240V plugs with USB slots, one pair underneath the table and one pair above the kitchen counter
– 40A DC-DC charger (mounted behind the driver’s seat where the van’s battery is found)
– A 12V fuse box which connects to: a series of overhead lights, a dimmable strip of warm mood lights, the hob, x2 USB plug sockets for use without turning on the inverter, the water pump, the fridge, the diesel heater
– A final switch to turn the entire system off and disconnect the battery if needed or not in use.

The extensive battery size, solar panel set up, and DC-DC charger which charges the battery whilst driving means that I have only ever needed to use shore power a hand full of times. This set up has been sufficient to run a home-office setup full time as a remote worker completely off-grid.

The bench seats each lift up to reveal more storage, and there are large overhead cabinets for even more storage, in addition to storage space above the cab and a bookshelf. The portable toilet is also neatly stored in an accessible cupboard beneath the bench seats.
There is a single opening window in the sliding door, enough to maintain privacy and security whilst allowing for light and airflow.
This conversion was completed in early 2024 and has worked flawlessly for 2.5 years, it was then recently renovated in August 2026 to freshen up paint work and provide a brand new finish.
