Conversion Description

The time has come for me to sell my dearly loved home, Willow, as I am moving abroad. I’ve spent over a year living in her full time, as a solo female, and have had many beautiful adventures in her and it was one of the best years of my life.

The van is designed for full time, off grid, solo van life and is an extremely comfortable and practical space to live in. I converted her myself with the help of my family over the course of 10 months and put so much love and attention to detail into the layout and build. Despite being a small space, there is everything you need in her to live comfortably and feels cosy but very spacious inside. We wanted to do the build as sustainably as possible, and so included recycled and up-cycled materials such as pallet wood and insulation made from recycled plastic bottles.

I ensured to have access to the cab area from the back which always gave me peace of mind, but mainly was very useful to not have to go out into the rain every time I parked up!

Specific items I installed have all worked perfectly. Since there are so many options for fridges, fans, toilets etc I put a lot of time into researching which ones to go for and I’ve been so happy with what I chose. Everything has worked perfectly and is reliable. The electric system has always been brilliant, I’ve always had plenty of power for all my needs.

KITCHEN:
The kitchen is designed for anyone who loves cooking, with very spacious drawers, pull out pantry, and large double shelved overhead cupboard. The desk is useful additional space to use when cooking. The sink is the size of a washing up bowl, which I found to be the perfect balance of not taking up too much space but also being big enough for everything you use a sink for. The water tank holds 105L, which I found to last me 6-9 days for drinking, dishes and a shower.

When cooking the maxxair fan works fantastically at removing smells and steam, and the skylight can be opened to get even more airflow.

BATHROOM:
The bathroom is tucked away in the corner but is accessible at all times. I find the composting toilet to genuinely work very well, zero smells and it is nice to not have to rely on finding and paying for chemical waste disposal. The toilet fan is on a switch which I usually turn off at night as it does make a very small sound.

The shower is a simple portable camping one, which can be used in the van or outside. To have a hot shower, move the toilet out the cubicle and fill up the shower tank with hot water heated on the stove mixed with cold.

The bathroom has lots of hooks and lines to hang up wet clothing and towels out of the way of the main living area.

TABLE:
The table is secured down so it doesn’t move around when driving but can be removed in about 5 seconds. This gives the options to use it outside, or fold it up and tuck it away behind the passenger seat or garage which opens up the living space. The fold up chair lives behind the passenger seat and can be brought out when wanting to sit at the table or use outside.

GARAGE:
The garage is home to the water tank and water set up, diesel heater, gas locker, and electrics. There are also some handy storage drawers and some room left over which can fit bulkier things such as the portable shower, levelling blocks, and camping chairs.

STORAGE:
There is loads of storage in Willow! When living in her everything I owned fitted in her nicely. Firstly, the bulkhead cupboard is huge and I installed a shelf in there to maximise the space even more. There is also the cupboard opposite the bed, a drawer above the fridge, all the kitchen drawers and cupboards, and finally some space under the sink.

Beds Description

The bed measures 120cm W x 161cm L which is a standard queen size in width and shorter than standard in length, therefore is most comfortable for shorter people. There is the possibility to install incut extenders if necessary. The mattress is 12.5cm thick memory foam and is lovely and comfortable – it’s one mattress with no slits or multiple pieces. It can sleep two people as long as you don’t mind being a bit cosy!

The bed can also convert into a sofa in about 1 minute, by flipping up the back half. This also makes the garage area and electrics even more accessible.

I positioned the skylight above the bed area to stargaze at night, and during the day it draws in lots of light making it a nice bright space.
