Gertie has a very low mileage 3519 cc petrol engine. She has 4 gears plus reverse, a top speed of 50 mph on the flat, and does about 14 mpg. She will force you to enjoy life in the slow lane. She weighs over 3.5 tonnes, so you will need a C1 licence (you will have this already if you passed your test before Jan 1st 1997). The cab and chassis are in good condition for a vehicle of her age, and the engine runs well. There is rust in the floor of the cab, which is normal for a 1970s Bedford TK, and the cab steps need attention. She is enormous fun to drive. As she is a heritage vehicle, Gertie doesn’t require an MOT.
Rare find: there are only a handful of Bedford TK horse lorries left in the UK, and Gertie’s mahogany and curves make her a stand-out beauty.
Gertie is a completely original Bedford horse lorry with rear and side horse ramps, side door, and horse gates with their original removable pin hinges. With masses of available weight capacity, and a cargo space 2 m wide and 5 m long, there is enough room here to create either a mobile palace of a camper, or go the whole 9 yards and build a fully off-grid overlander or tiny home. She has huge clearance with room under the floor for things like a generator, water and gas tanks, batteries, and all the things you would usually have to give up living space to fit. There is room for a bunk over the cab, or capacious additional storage. There is enough roof real estate to run off the solar year round in Southern England, or for 9 months of the year in Scotland.
Gertie definitely needs some TLC: she needs new wooden door frames, repairs to the rear horse door, the rooflight needs resealing, and there is rot in the wooden body that needs stabilising. The floor has been tested and is sound, apart from the one obvious patch that can be seen in the photos. Regardless of whether all you do is make her watertight and park her in a field as a one-of-a-kind glamping experience, or kit her out as a tiny home to live in rent free, she will reward you 1000 times over. This vehicle still has so much more to give.
