⚠️ Honest Mechanical Notes
We believe in full transparency. Earlier this summer, the glow plug light & amber engine light began appearing intermittently. Diagnostics showed the need for new glow plugs. A mechanic inspected further and found:
• One glow plug appears to be the wrong size, making removal difficult
• There is a risk the cylinder head may need renewing if removal fails
• An oil leak likely requiring:
o Rear crank main oil seal replacement
o Sump sealer replacement
• There is also a front windscreen leak, which would cost up to £300 to reseal
Estimated cost for all mechanical work: £1,500–£4,000, depending on labour difficulty (labour costs made up more than half of the quote). The van still drives fine and has completed numerous trips to the lake district this summer with no issues whatsoever!
This makes Stanley a perfect great value van for someone who is a mechanic or has a family member/friend who can cover labour costs.
We had planned to keep Stanley for another year then selling in 2027 to fund a couple of bucket-list trips before we settled down to raise a family. However, our 9 year old golden retriever was diagnosed with aggressive cancer just 5 weeks ago, and his vet bills (~£4,000) have understandably taken priority & we’ve therefore made the decision to sell at a reduced rate now.
