The idea for the conversion revolved around transporting our outdoor gear in as small vehicle as possible. The ‘van’ is actually registered as a car since it was originally a disability vehicle MPV, so insurance is very cheap. Living in London at the time we could drive in the ULEZ and even store our bikes in the van overnight.
The bed height is set so that a large downhill bike can fit underneath, mounting to the aluminium extrusion rails at the bottom of the van to keep them secure. It’s also great for carrying surfboards, since a shortboard can be put straight in while mid lengths can go diagonally.
The conversion is fairly minimal so does not affect the weight or handling of the van. The side windows are tinted with 5% tint for full privacy while the rear are 15% so you can still reverse in the dark. The can will come with a custom set of suction window covers that we made. The factory skylight is great for watching sunsets in the evening.
There is a 12V fused outlet that runs all the time in the rear which used to power the disability access winch. I’ve instead put 2 fast charge USB ports and a cigarette lighter style port in the rear as well as a voltmeter so that battery voltage can be monitored. Although it doesn’t have a leisure battery, I’ve never had any issues with running down main battery while charging phones, cameras etc, even when parked for multiple days. The (terrible) stock radio was replaced for a Sony model that has aux input.
At the rear of the van is a table that bridges between the rear doors. It’s great for cooking on and is super simple to set up. When not in use it can be stored in the back of the van or under the mattress. Lastly, the rear carpet was replaced with a waterproof vinyl flooring so that it can be wiped clean when mud and the like inevitably ends up on it! The whole conversion can be unbolted in under an hour so that the included 3rd seat can be fitted, effectively turning it back into a normal van.
The bed is unique to any other Doblo conversions I have seen. It is a fixed double width bed that takes up around a third of the total height of the van. It leaves plenty of space below for storing all the kit you need to have great adventures. Current record is 4 bikes, 2 surfboards and camping kit with space still to sleep!
