VW Crafter LWB 2019 with 5 belted seats, perfect for family

We converted this 2019 VW Crafter LWB in 2023 for our family of 5 (our three daughters are aged 10, 7 and 4) as we couldn’t find any 5 berth, 5 belted seats campervans.

It features three seats at the front, two seats behind which convert into a rock n roll double bed (professionally installed – can provide info), a comfy double bed at the very back of the van, with lots of storage underneath (accessible through hatch from front and through backdoors from the back).

It has a professionally installed diesel heater, sink and tap, 2 plate electric induction hob, lots of storage, van toilet ++.

Currently our two yongest children have been sharing the rock n roll bed, and then we have a blow up bed for the eldest that goes along the front seats.

We were going to install a shower between the rock n roll bed and the double bed, but instead opted for an outdoor shower or shower at campsites/swim in the sea! We personally we enjoyed the extra space without the bathroom, and then the van toilet pulls out of the hatch (but is stored in the boot).

🔋 Electrics & power – all done by Rich at Auto Elec Wiltshire, who specialises in Victron Energy, Campervans and Motorhomes.

The van is fitted with a professionally installed by electrician Victron electrical system, known for its reliability and efficiency. This provides dependable off-grid power for day-to-day living, whether you’re parked up in the countryside or on a longer road trip.

A roof-mounted solar panel system keeps the leisure battery topped up, allowing you to stay off-grid comfortably without relying on hook-ups.

Power has been thoughtfully distributed throughout the van, with:
Multiple USB charging points for phones, tablets and devices.
Three reading lights and spotlights in the ceiling.
Mains plug sockets for laptops and other appliances
This setup makes it easy to work remotely, charge devices, and enjoy modern comforts while travelling.

Electric water pump which pumps into the sink (so the sink functions just as a normal sink)

THE BUILD
My husband is a very skilled builder and did the build himself, but he hired in electricians and plumbers to do the electrics and plumbing (we can show certificates and receipts for this), so everything is 100% safe.

We also used no-added-formaldehyde plywood for the build, due to wanting good air quality inside.

The VW Crafter is surprisingly easy and comfortable to drive, even at this size. The long wheelbase gives excellent stability on the motorway, while visibility is great for country lanes and coastal roads. Despite its generous interior space, it handles more like a large car than a van, making it ideal for longer trips and first-time campervan drivers alike.

Diesel efficiency makes it well suited for longer adventures, and the manual gearbox offers confident control on hills and winding roads.

The Crafter LWB is a favourite for camper conversions because it offers:

It has taken us all the way up to Norway and back (twice!), and on some of the best holidays we’ve ever had, and has been the most amazing van for our family.

However, due to a once in a lifetime opportunity for us to build our own eco house, we’ve had to sell the van to afford our new house. We will undoubtedly end up converting another campervan after our house build (as we’ve promised our children we would).
