VW Transporter T5.1 4Motion LWB High Roof
This is a truly one of a kind campervan and one of the most popular rental vans to be listed on Quirky Campers. It is fully winterised and has 4WD so is capable of going anywhere in any weather, from the NC500 to Alpine ski resorts.
Base vehicle is a Transporter T5.1 4Motion with Long Wheelbase (LWB) and factory high roof. It has a manual gearbox. This is an extremely rare vehicle, there are less than 10 still registered in the UK.
The van has 4WD with differential lock, suspension was upgraded by previous owner using Seikel shocks and lift kit which really improves the ride. This also allowed the weight limit to be updtaed to 3350kg giving a generous payload of 650kg for the passengers and their adventure gear, while also making the van suitable for bumpy roads (as long as you tie everything down!).
Bodywork is in good condition, sills were resealed and resprayed less than 5000 miles ago.
MOT was done last week so has a full 12 months on it with no advisories. Despite high miles, mechanically it’s great and runs really well. This particular T5 model has the best engine type (CAA 2.0 litre turbo) and they’re famous for doing starship mileages. Clutch and dual mass flywheel were replaced in 2019, alternator in late 2022 and suspension bushes/arms this year.
It comes with 5 x BF Goodrich AT KO2 tyres in great condition (less than 10,000 miles, generally expect 55-60k miles out of them). Spare wheel is mounted on a custom steel frame on the back door. These tyres have the 3PMSF symbol making them suitable for use in snow and ice (they can be used all year round too!). There is a tow bar with ball.
The campervan conversion uses the best components, highlights include a 200Ah lithium battery and all Victron electrical system with Cerbo GX touchscreen control system, Eberspacher diesel heater, Dometic 45 litre fridge and Dometic awning. Furniture is handmade using solid oak and has many unique Instagram worthy features such as the pull out hob, flip down table and extending bed. No expense has been spared on materials or components, it’s fully kitted out for any off grid adventure.
The van has been fully winterised and is set up for ski trips – previous owners camped comfortably at outside temperatures down to minus 20. Double thick insulation was used, it includes custom-made quilted curtains, fitted internal fresh water tanks and a the top of the range Eberspacher diesel heater.
Inside there is a 2-burner gas hob built on heavy duty rails. The unique inside/outside mechanism means it is possible to slide it out of the side door for outside cooking when weather permits, or you can simply lift the lid and cook indoors. Gas is stored in an underslung 15 litre tank which can be refilled at any petrol station selling LPG. The landlord’s gas safety certificate expired in 2021 as it hasn’t been rented since then.
The 65-litre fresh water tank is winterproofed and sits under the main bed, there is also an additional 24 litre tank connected to the filtered drinking water system. The 70-litre grey water tank is underneath the van. There is an electric water heater which can heat up while on a campsite electric supply and can store 10 litres of hot water for up to 24 hours. There is a shower that connects to the kitchen tap and extends out of the side window. A portable toilet is stored underneath the bed.
There is a 200Ah lithium battery which can be charged from 300W of solar, a 30A Victron DCDC charger (while driving) or a Victron Multiplus (while plugged in). There are several USB and cigarette lighter sockets dotted around the van in convenient locations for phone and laptop charging and 2 x 230V power sockets. The on board Victron inverter can provide up to 800W of 230V power while off grid (enough for charging all your gear plus running small appliances like hair straighteners or a blender) and when plugged into a campsite, can provide up to 4000W for your more powerful appliances.
You’ll also find a Dometic wind out awning included and a folding table that stashes away inside the sliding door.
The main bed slides out of the handmade bench to form a 1.9m x 1.3m double. Cushions are firm and comfy.
There is an optional hanging guest bed measuring 1.8m x 0.7m. This is removable if you want to stick to a 2 berth. It clips to steel frame inside roof and hangs down above the main bed. Ideal for a child but will easily sleep an adult, we tested it with 2 adults and it’s strong!
This is really such a fun campervan, it looks like an ice cream van and we often get asked whether we’re selling ice creams, maybe missed an opportunity to install a freezer!

Quirky loves this style means that Quirky Campers would potentially approve this vehicle for hiring. However, Quirky have not approved a Gas Safe certificate, a Weighbridge certificate, or the vehicle's electrics. Buyers must check these themselves. For some tips on what to look out for read this. If the listing has no Gas Safe certificate, no unladen weight and no electrical sign-off please proceed with caution!
